If just during starts it is the belt most likely, or the tensioner less likely. place unit on its side and check.

Maytag performa model PDET910AYW--sounds like a belt that needs dressing--loud squeaking sound at times but at other times no sound at all What can this be?

its the drum rollers at the rear of the drum inside the machine, they get dried out from the heat and do capture some lint, then they squeal and chatter, you need to remove the front cover and drum belt and drum to access them, then remove e-clips that secure them to the spindle they ride on and clean out both spindle and wheel center, lightly oil with a very small amount of a dry lube like silicon and replace also do this to the idler pulley as they can also squeal while you have it apart

When i turn on the dry it is making a loud Squeaky sound. the dry is still heating, just making loud squeaky sound

Hi an welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
This squeaky sound your hearing is usually the idler pulley, idler pulley shaft, but also can be the motor or the drum roller bearings. Usually if the drum roller bearings are bad the dryer will thump as it rotates.
The idler pulley and lever is and assembly that is item 8 of this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5174194&diagram_id=28598568#d28598568

Since it is squealing at this time when you have the repairs done that you replace the belt that is item 21 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5174194&diagram_id=28598572#d28598572

The motor is item 7 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5174194

I recommend that if you do the repairs that you replace the idler pulley, the drum rollers, and the belt.
Drum rollers are item 17 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5174194&diagram_id=28598572#d28598572 (make sure to check the drum roller shafts that are item 19 of the same link.)

While repairs are being completed also inspect the drum front and rear seals. Thare are items 14 and 26 (Same part number) of the above link.

By doing all of the above you should be able to get many more years of service out of your dryer.

If you need to purchase a service manual for self repair it can be downloaded here for $9.95:

Hi. My Neptune dryer was not sounding as I remembered it. A higher pitch than usual while it was drying clothes. Then I noticed it was reluctant to start when pushing the "start" button, with...

burning smell is because the drum is not rolling and the motor is trying to turn, hopefully it did not damage the motor: more then likely it the drum rollers/glides, might want to check the idler arm here is a website that will help. depending on fast you need your dryer a good and cheap place to buy parts is on eBay, of course they can be purchased locally, Good Luck Tim:

High-pitched squeaking during operation

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE STARTING ANY REPAIRS
Your problem sounds like drum rollers may be in need of lubrication, or maybe your drum belt has slipped off of the idler arm pulley.
If you have a front loading machine,

Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer. Also remove the screws holding the lint filter in place.
Be REAL CAREFUL not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch. Then remove the top of the dryer.
Remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt. Remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm pulley and motor.
Now is a good time to check the belt to see if it has slipped off of the idler arm pulley and also to check the belt condition for wear.
Be sure to note the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt.
Check your drum rollers for flat spots or wear, if they have flat spots or wear on them replace them.
If the drum rollers don't have flat spots or wear on them then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve your noise problem.
I will include these two websites for parts and further help:

It squeals while its running

HI, there are two possible issues here concerning this noise. it is possible that the belt is worn or, a bit loose on the spinning pulley. i recommend inspection the drive assembly. check the belt for possible ware. replace if necessary.

The second problem spot will be a set of damaged drum roller bearings. you will need to totally disassemble the unit to replace these parts.

***most common issue will be bad roller bearings

Maytag gas dryer squealing

Hi, this is a belt issue. make sure the tension on the belt/motor is sufficient. adjust to specs. if the belt is fine, this will be bad bearings in the roller assembly.

Replace the rollers in this case.

Dryer makes a loud squeaking/squealing noise while drying.

If the dryer model number begins with 417, the drum is supported by a ball bearing in back, and a seal and glides up front. Often, the bearing will become very dry, either from years of use, or from excessive lint blowing up into the bearing. If the bearing isn't cracked or otherwise noticeably bad, you can usually solve the issue simply by lubing the bearing with a high temp grease. While the machine is apart...(a major pain in the butt), make sure to check the condition of the seal and glides on the front panel, and replace the belt if it looks at all cracked or frayed.
If this dryer is not a 417 and/or does not have a rear bearing, it's best to get a maintainance kit (belt, idler pulley and drum rollers) and install all the aforementioned parts, as they are the most likely source of screech. Also, check the motor by spinning the shaft manually with the belt off....if that is squeeking, it's motor
time.
