Hi MJANKOW520. I?m going to assume your KA mixer is a ?Tilt-Head? mixer. You don?t say specifically. Based on your description of the symptoms you mixer exhibits, I would say that your head locking mechanism (or a component) of it is either broken, worn or loosened due to normal wear and tear and need to be readjusted (or repaired) for it to keep your mixer head stationery. The inspection and troubleshooting of the inside of your mixer is a DITY capability, particularly if your mixer is out of warranty. Just be sure to have the Parts List manual on hand. If you're lacking one, you can download a PDF version from the KA website: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number, in your case, try K45SSW, and select the file listed under Parts List (check to see it this matches your mixer model). This parts list manual provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the part name and numbers. Turn to page3, titled: Base and Pedestal Unit. You?ll want to focus on Illus. #9, Link & Lever Latch assembly, which locks the mixer head to the pedestal when run your mixer. Check to see if something is just loose, exceedingly worn or broken. If something has broken, you can order replacement parts and install yourself. As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com. Prices for the same part can vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping. Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on other mixer components. It can be messy but quite gratifying to diagnose and repair your mixer yourself. Finally, here's a link to an excellent site that details the disassembly and replacement of a mixer's grease, which might be helpful, too. http://www.foodonthefood.com/food_on_the_food/2009/04/how-to-repair-a-kitchenaid-mixer-yourself.html If you feel this is beyond your capabilities and would be too difficult to do yourself you can take your mixer to a local small appliance repair shop and have them troubleshoot and fix your mixer. KA Customer Care can provide you with the name and phone # of the closest authorized KA repair shop in your area or you can do a Online web search, but be sure to get at least three estimates before deciding to commit to one repair shop. Good luck. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA If this solution has helped you, please rate it, thanks! - hslincoln

I am having this exact same problem with my mixer too! I have read the parts list shown as above. My latch, link and lever is actually loose. I am just trying to figure out how to take it out and repair it! It doesn't show how to get to that actual piece...

I was having the same problem with the head of my mixer bouncing around, especially when making bread dough. The problem seemed like it was slowly getting progressively worse.
I started taking a closer look at the problem. When I turned the mixer on its side and looked at the hinge (between the head and the stand) from the opening on the bottom of the stand, I noticed a gap between the flat head screw on the hinge and the inside of the stand (when the head is down and locked in place). This is what allows the head to bounce around.
By adjusting the screw with the head tilted back I was able to eliminate the wobble between the head and the stand.
I hope my solution helps some people.

KitchenAid ACCOLADE 400 Mixer. When mixing dough the bowl jumps out of the the bowl lock. How can this problem be resolved?

I know this sounds a bit simple but the bowl cup can sometimes actually wear out and a very fast (# screws) and a new one and the problem is solved. If however there is a problem on the head hold down set screw (under the mixer in the cavity ) it can come loose then the mixer head can bounce all over the place causung the bowl to get loose in the holding cup at the base of the mixer., I hope this helps, let us know if you need more, we can FixYa

Top part of mixer is loose. how to tighten?

I had the same problem.. not the top plate, but the whole head was wobbly. I fixed it by removing the top plate, then locating the three screws that hold the top to the base. These screws are under the motor. I had to remove the motor, but this also required taking the transmission cover off. Sounds harder than it really is. Once I tightened those three screws, the play went away.

My mixer is a lift-top and the top seems to be loose and wobbles as it mixes. help?

Hi, W/D here.

If you raise the head of your mixer, and look under the raised part, you'll see a silver screw head with a slot for a standard bladed screwdriver. Tighten that screw, and that should do it.

Its bouncing when mixing

The head unit is not locked in place. If the lever is in the lock position and it still bounces, the cam lever inside has either snapped off or became loose.

The BUSH on the spindle is worn out. You will notice that liquid blending might make the liquid to flow out through this . If so it is confirmed. This is usual as the food particles gets caught on and wear off the bush in due time.
the blade unit has to be taken out and the bush must be changed after choosing the right bush for the steel spindle.
You can confirm rotating the spindle and see if this shakes.
Hope this tip confirms the fault.

Mixer head loose

Referring to the diagram on:

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10157992.pdf

Remove the screw, item 22, to remove the trim band around the mixer. This will reveal 4 screws which hold the top cover on. Remove the screws and lift the top off. Find all the screws which hold the gearhead in place and tighten them all. If you want to make the fix a permanent one put some thread-loc compound on each screw and tighten it.

Kitchenaid Artisan Stand Mixer

This sounds like an issue of beater to bowl adjustment, which can come out of alignment naturally over time and with use of the machine.

If the flat beater is striking the bottom of your bowl, this may cause the locking mechanism to loosen and may cause the mixing head to "bounce" during use.

Your Use and Care Guide will cover the "beater to bowl adjustment," which you can do at home in a few minutes with a flathead screwdriver.
