Dropped my laptop and now the screen is dark. I can faintly see what is on the screen and the laptop hooks up to an external monitor with no problems. How can I fix this?

HI,

It sounds like either your backlight or inverter. These are very low in cost, and can be replaced very simply. Go to Dell's support center and connect with their manual showing you the part number that you need to purchase, and shop elsewhere for it. eBay is always a good place for replacement parts. Once you get it, then follow the manual from Dell and start unscrewing! Once you get to the the inverter or backlight you just pull out the old and place in the new one. You'll know immediately if it works or not. The cost is around $20.00 vs. the cost of a new laptop.

Good Luck

Mark

One simple solution could be... Hold the function key and press F8 to brighten, F7 will darken. It's just a possibility.

Very dim LED screen on Acer One D255E netbook

The laptop video circuits are good and the fault lies with the display or the power feeding the display.
Go for the display since they do go bad.

A125 monitor is dark

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

Compaq Presario CQ50-110US 15-inch Laptop dropped will boot but no video

Your laptop may have a combination of problems. Since the laptop was dropped, it is possible that your may a motherboard that no longer outputs video through the video controller, or the screen may have been damaged internally. Try hooking up an external monitor through the vga output of your laptop, usually located on the side or back of the laptop. If the external monitor works, then most likely it is your screen that's bad, if the external monitor doesn't works, then most likely it is your motherboard that's bad.

Let me know if this helps.

My screen is dark, appears like no back light, but everything else still works fine. can faintly see screen

Hello
If you can faintly see the screen I would guess the back lights are like you said....not working.
Can you hook up a external monitor or TV so you can still use it and get your files in order. or until you choose to get it fixed. I would get a couple of estimates first
I also found this video if you want to replace the back light inverter yourself.

Dell inspiron 5150 dark screen, faint image in background

If it showed a pinkish tint on the screen before it went out it could be the backlite. If you can see a faint screen when you turn the room lights out it chuld be the inverter. Inverters are cheap ... a used one for around $8 on ebay. Try that first. Make sure that you buy the EXACT model that is presently in your laptop.
