Camera has failed to operate giving a "change batteries" message

I've had a Canon S3IS camera for approximately 2 years (I bought it new). In the past few weeks, the camera has failed to operate at least 4 times, giving me a "change batteries" message.
I use rechargeable Energizer AA batteries. All batteries were fully charged. After I got the “change batteries" message, I switched the batteries for 4 other fully-charged batteries. After a few shots (4-5), I again received the "change batteries" message. The next day I purchased new rechargeable Energizer AA batteries, charged them with a new charger, and inserted them into the camera. After 10-12 shots, the camera again shut-down, briefly displaying the "change batteries" message.

Today, with the previously recharged batteries, the camera seems to be working fine.

I am at a loss as to why the camera repeatedly failed. I have lost faith in its reliability. What other steps can I take to make this camera work and be reliable?

Thanks.

Your problem may be due to corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, the camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

Despite new batteries, still says 'change batteries'

Make sure there has been no corrosion on the battery terminals. If there is take a fine grit sand paper and carefully rub on them.

Canon S3IS freezes when connected to the computer

1)You need to unplug the camera, turn it off. Then plug it back in, turn it on, and wait. If nothing comes up, go to "My Computer" and you should see the camera icon there. Double Click it and there you are.

2)Take your camera to a friends computer, plug it in if it works, problem is your computer.

Hi there.
You may not like this solution, but it's real anyway. Average low-end digital camera life span is approximately 2 years depending on how much you use it. They vary between manufacturer. Low-end cameras ($100. to $200. range) have an approximate 1500 to 3000 shutter clicks which equates to about 1 cent per photo. Granted, more expensive cameras equal more shutter clicks and thusly and lower cost ratio. So, I'm sorry to say that you have just about hit the life span of your device. It would cost more to fix than to purchase a new one.
I hope this helps you, but no one here can suggest a "fix" for it. Thanks for coming to FixYa, and feel free to rate my solution.

A620 wont operate from batteries but will work off of ac adapter

Try replacing the batteries and check again. If this fails to solve the problem, try cleaning the battery terminals and the camera's contact points with an eraser. It could also be possible that the battery chamber's door is not closing properly. Try to press it while you turn the camera on.

Hi there, I have a Canon Powershot S3IS and just lately when you try to turn it on it comes up with a message that says E24. I have looked through the manual and cannot find anything resembling this...

You have 2 choices here, one is send the camera into Canon for exchange or replace the Camera, this would be based on cost. You can't fix it as no parts are available from the manufacturer to the public.

Even after putting new batteries it gives message"change the batteries"

Are you still using alkaline batteries? If so, alkaline batteries just don't have the power for more than a few pics in a digital camera. Some may have reached their shelf life, and though brand new, may even have problems just powering startup of the camera. Digital cameras for the most part should only be used with rechargeable NiMH batteries. Retailers sell these for around $7 for a package of four (about $15-19 for the batteries with charger). Keep in mind they'll save you big bucks in the long run over alkalines, AND they'll last for at least 100 pictures per charge (and probably many many more). You'll be very pleased with their performance, and may slap yourself for not buying them sooner. When at the store, look on the package for a power rating of at least 2500 mah.

Canon A95 "Change Batteries" problem!

I have this problem as well. I thought it was a problem with my NiMH batteries. So, I bought a volt meter to make sure the batteries worked. I have 8 AA NiMH batteries. I charged them all up and tested them with the volt meter. They were all good to go. However, no matter what I put in the camera one of two things happens:
1. I get the "change batteries" message.
2. I don't get the message, but the next time I check the camera (a few days later), one of them is totally drained.
Something is very wrong and I plan on contacting Canon.
