I had an LG 37" LCD that did this to me. Turned out to be bad solder joints on the side button board. Just reflowed and it starting working fine.

But now that I think about, I had another set do the same thing, only it wasn't the button board. I had to upgrade the TV's firmware via the USB service port. Just needed a USB flash drive and downloaded the firmware from the mfg's website. There were easy to follow instructions there too!

My 42" Plasma model 42PF9630A/37 started having this problem on May 9, 2011. We bought it in 2005 and never did firmware upgrades. We did it this time - took 10 minutes start to finish. Very easy to follow instructions. I put this in the search engine and found the right site - "philips plasma 42pf9630a firmware upgrade.

It looks like it fixed a bunch of other problems as well - Green line at right side when playing Bluerays, handshake issues with the FIOS HD set-top box and other video issues. It could be in my head but I think the picture is better as well.

So easy. I was very close to putting it out at the street but I guess I will keep it now.

The menu screen keeps popping up and we can't get it off.

Upgrade the main TV software to:
- Version 1.10.0.0 (or higher) for the JL2.1 chassis (Europe and AP region).
- Version 1.1.0.0 (or higher) for the BL2.x and BP2.x chassis (Nafta region).

The SW is posted on the Philips website and must be installed into the TV by using a USB memory stick (read the instructions carefully that come with the SW).

MENU KEEPS POPPING UP

It's a software problem with the TV. Go to the PHILIPS web site for downloading the latest software upgrade for your TV to fix the problem.
Lots of Philips TV are having the same problem. Philips support should provide the software for free.
