Tried to update the firmware on the Magellan 1470

roadmate 1470 will not boot up. stuck on startup logo

Contact Magellan for this issue. There are others also who had their Magellan GPS bricked while updating it. If it's a software fault it's serious - firmware update procedures should be fault free and thoroughly tested and shouldn't go wrong.

The problem usually can't be resolved without special factory tools to re-flash the internal firmware.

if the computer will see your 1470, just run the update again...if that fails, Magellan will repair or replace any of the gps that were rendered inoperable due to one of their updates.

I should pre-warn you that they are not very friendly. About 4 years ago I bought my mom a Navman ICN 620, after 6 months I tried to get updates and called and emailed them for about four months finally when they responded they just said they were not updating US maps for any of their previous products. Looks like they are more an international company that sells in limited quantity in the US through Radio Shack stores. I have gone back to their website about 5 times since then to see if any updates were ever added and they never did.

If its an older unit I would replace it Tomtom makes a nice unit and Magellan even has a few units with free traffic updates (depending on area)

I finally just replaced the unit for her this christmas bought her a Magellan roadmate 1470 for $150.

Just FYI most GPS manufacturers want you to pay YEARLY for their map updates and if you skip an update you may have to also pay to do a firmware update. I have a Tomtom go 720 which is 2 years old they wanted $49 for a firmware update and $99 for the map update.

Same thing happened to me. I downloaded the 2.20 update and it will not let me boot up the unit. It will not get past the spinning clock. I needed to go on a trip this weekend and have to use my cell phone as my gps. What a big let down.

if you are looking for map updates I have not been successful in transferring data from one unit to another. That requires their "process" experimentation on bypassing their updates on a older roadmate 700 series caused alot of pain.

If you have a unit more than 3 years old don't waste money on updates the new roadmate 1430 or 1470 run about $150 and the 1 touch navigation is much better than the older software. There have also been MAJOR improvements in the GPS receiver and sensitivity is far superior to those units built even just two years ago.

Hi there really isn't anything to install, register your GPS download the updated software I believe its version 2.2 for your model and CALL them within 30 days of purchase to see fi a map update is available.

• If you wait till after the first 30 days you must buy any map updates.

When you connect the unit to your computer you can access the drive on it but its not like the TOMTOM's where it loads their software onto your computer.

Same thing happened to me. It was working fine yesterday, until I arrived at my destination, then it froze and when I restart it, it stops at the spinning clock. I'm so mad at myself for not researching the update and finding out that this is happening a lot!!
I don't think I have my receipt. It will be interesting to see if Magellan charges me for THEIR mistake!

I had a similar problem with the address book not working on a refurbished 1470 that Magellan sent me. I reinstalled the latest update and it fixed the problem. It doesn't take long to do and is worth a try. Make sure you read and follow all the instructions.
