there can be a number of things that can halt the boot process
bios settings not right
bad or faulty leads

make sure there are no disks in cd floppy usb drives

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE)) make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty

if its a flat ribbon 40 pin IDE it will be the fist to fail

I need to put my hard drive into an enclosure but I cannot figure out if I need to switch it to a slave before adding it to another computer

i have done this alot for my customers and its really simple. if you look up your drive and get the jumper settings for it and set it to cable select or master in a one drive enclosure it will work well. i do not recommend putting it on slave because some enclosures will not recognize the drive, I do recommend having an enclosure with a fan on board and an external power switch. the reason it the fan will extend the life of the drive and the power switch eill allow you to power it on and off without having to flatten (power hot swap) the drive. Hot swap is ok but this is better than just unplugging the drive. removing the power from the drive keeps the drive in park until you re-power. as long as the drive is "parked" it is les likely to cause read/write sector errors.
If you have any problems let me know and please leave positive feedback for me. Jethro
