I recently copied a lot (200gb-ish) of data from one external hard drive to another. Then windows crashed and displayed the 'delayed write error' and I lost almost all my files. However, on 'my computers' it shows that the old external hard drive (from which I copied the files) still has 400 gb of content, which means that the files may possibly still be on there...? Even though it doesn't show when I open the hard drive. Please help me recover the files!

Sorry, that was a little misleading. What I meant was I cut and pasted. I'll still try it though and see how it works. Thanks!

Thanks, that program appears to be working! :)

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your description of "...copied..." is very significant as it indicates that the original files are technically still in the external drive and 'were not erased'. Since the external drive appears to be still recognized by the computer, then what must be tried is data recovery.

While there are a number of free recovery utilities on the Internet, I have had very good results with GetDataBack.

You would need another drive where to save the extracted / recovered files. To my recollection, the last time I did a recovery of a 250Gb HD, it took the computer nearly 24 hours.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Appreciate the postback and corrective information.

And I understand "...cut and pasted...". To give you an idea, GetDataBack was successful in the "recovery of a 250Gb HD, it took the computer nearly 24 hours." I missed adding the description "...that was inadvertently formatted...".

Try it, the Demo would show you what possibly could be recovered and therefore allow you to evaluate if it is worth the purchase.

Can i transfer information to a mac

If the external hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read data off this hard drive.
The FIX..
Connect the USB external hard drive to a Windows computer and copy your data off this hard drive to the computer.
Then format the external hard drive in FAT32 file format. (the MAC can read and write to data to and from a Windows PC)
Now copy the your data from the computer back onto the external hard drive.
Now you can connect the external hard drive to the MAC and download your data to the MAC.

Ifyour hard drive can be detected and shows up as a drive letter in my computerbut you can't access or open your files, then you can recover your data from hard drive with data recovery software easily. This way is theeasiest and the most inexpensive way for hard drive data recovery. If you bring it to BestBuy or a professional, they will cost you $500-1000 or more.
I managed to recover data from crashed hard drive with Tenorshare DataRecovery. If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive for free topreview whether your data can be recovered. It will show you the filename, type, date and of your files and thumbnails for pictures that it foundon your drive. Get it from http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm
If it fails, you will have to bring it to Best Buy or a professional but let'shope not because it will cost you a lot of money ($500-1000 or more) andwhether they can recover data is not guaranteed.

My hitachi external hard drive can't be found by my laptop

Hi there,
Remove it and install it into another computer to see what'll happen.
If it shows up in 'my computer' as a drive letter(like E: drive) but you can't access it,you can recover data on it with data recovery program to avoid losing them.
I have succeed with Tenorshare data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash and 'not recognized' issue. You can get it here: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/index.htm
After you recover your data, you can format it to check out whether it can be fixed.
If the hard drive can't be detected, you can try this way.Put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in the freezer overnight. Then while it's still cold plug it into the computer and you may be able to view it in 'my computer'. And run the recovery program to recover your data on it.
If it fails, you will have to go to a recovery office but let's hope not because it will cost you a lot of money and whether they can recover data is not guaranteed.
This article will help.

Toshiba Hard Drive Crash

Hi,
if the datas aleady deleted, then you have nothing to lose. Right ?
What you need is a 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE ribbon cable connector.
this will enable you to put the drive into an IDE slot on the PC internal motherboard ( primary/secondary )
Unless it,s already 3.5"
boot the computer, see if it recognises the drive. And format it.
then you may be able, to re-fit back into the external casing, and use as an external again.
