SOURCE: Nikon D40X stopped auto-focusing yesterday

I too have the same auto focus issue. But the problem is intermittent.
Called Nikon today. They suggest:
- call when the camera is acting up
- be ready to give them the serial number

Apparently they are available 24 x 7 and will troubleshoot over the phone...

SOURCE: Nikon 18-200 autofocus lens won't

OK I just fixed it, thanks to Ken Rockwell.com who says:

"Once in a blue moon my Nikon 18-200mm won't focus on my D200. Manual focus works fine, but the lens won't autofocus no matter what I do. It's annoying!
Of course the camera needs to be pointed at something with contrast, lines or texture. Point it at the sky and nothing autofocuses. That's normal.
One time this was so bad I thought for sure I was going to have to send my lens in for service, since nothing would get it to go.
Then I discovered the problem: I had knocked the AF switch on my D200 to M. This switch is easy to knock and I had forgotten to check the obvious. There also is a switch on the lens which is not easy to knock, but I have left the lens set to M shooting at night, and I forgot to return it to A/M the next morning.
This fixes most of my problems.
Rarer is when the lens honestly won't focus. When this happens I turn the camera off and on. If this doesn't fix it, turn the camera off, press the lens release button and rotate the lens back and fourth a couple of times. This will clear any dust off the electrical contacts and focus returns."

SOURCE: nikon 18-200 mm vr lens not auto focusing on my nikon d200

lets start with the basics, try hard reseting it and try again, if that doesnt work then
try upgrading your firmware (if possible on your camera) and if that doesnt work then it may be the lens, but dont forget to spend a few hours trying to find a option for it in the meny

Nikkor lens 18-55 not working

I am assuming by "not working" you mean that it does not auto focus. Does your camera work with other lenses? You need to verify that the problem is the lens and not the camera. First try cleaning the electrical contacts on both the camera and lens using a pencil eraser. If that does not solve the problem, it is probably the motor in the lens. Send the lens to Nikon for repair.

Auto focus at full zoom not responding Nikon D80 with 18-200mm VR

Hi - I own this lens and it manually focuses at all focal lengths (hard to see at 18mm unless your subject is extremly close). You may need to get the lens checked. BTW - Mine was set as follows when I checked for you:
  • D80 was "on"
  • M/A
  • VR = Off
  • Normal (not Active)
Hope this helps!

Manual Focus won't work

Which camera are you using? If the body has AF/MF switch, put that also to MF.If this fails to help, take out the lens and try to change it to MF.

55-200mm VR focus noise

The lenses have a focus motor built into them.when the camera is set to auto focus, once you press the shutter button, the motor activates to set the correct focus. VR is for motion stabilization. Turn off AF on lenses and camera and see if noise stops.
