My generator runs automatically once a week. It didn't run this week and the red light was on for overcrank. I tried to manually start it, but it would not even attempt to turn over. What could be the problem?

The current models of automatic standby generators will have LED indicator lights on the side compartment of the generator. A green LED light will indicate that the unit is in AUTO mode and is ready to run, or is running properly during a utility outage. The yellow LED light will indicate that maintenance is needed. The red LED will indicate either that the unit is switched to OFF or that there is an alarm detected. If a yellow or red LED are present, you will need to check the generator's control panel, as it will describe the type of maintenance needed or the alarm present. This information can be found in the owner's manual as well. You can find a copy of the owner's manual online by searching the model or serial number of the unit here http://www.generac.com/service-support/product-support-lookup

Hi and welcome to FixYa I am Kelly. Your red LED is telling you that it was 1. overloaded. 2. has low voltage 3. overheated or 4. short in the powered circuit.
OVERLOAD LED (red): Lights up if the generator experiences
a load greater than the rated output, low voltage, overheats or
the powered circuit experiences a short. The output is stopped
even though the engine keeps running.
I do not know which of the 4 conditions caused your red light. If you have the read light with no load I would suspect low voltage from the generator / inverter. If it overheated you will also get the Red LED with no load.
The automatic test cycle is done for reasons besides just checking to see if it works, it is done to keep the engine in working order. Without running it regularly, it won't be able to run when you need it. If you really don't want the generator as a backup at all, you should sell it. On the other hand, maybe it's just noisy and runs at an inconvenient time. The electrician that installed it probably left a sticker for a number to call on the generator unit itself (or the transfer switch.) for service or questions. They should be happy to answer your questions about changing the schedule of the test cycle - and if they any sense at all for customer loyalty, they will probably do it for free.
The 'overcrank' error simply means it tried to start but never actually started. It cranked for an extended period. Check the fuel and starting issues you would normally check to start the engine.
Hi there, Most home standby generators are setup to run once a week so as to keep the engine lubed up and the generator windings dry. So if yours is comming on once a week at about the same time and running for something like 15 minutes, that's what is going on. On the other hand, if your generator is starting and the switch is transferring somewhat randomly, you could have a problem with the neutral connection in your system, the power could really be going out and coming back on, and/or the control board in your generator could be broken.
