Loud grinding noise when washer is pumping water out.
Unplug the machine. Tip the machine back. Take the plastic cover loose from the bottom front of the machine. There are 4 screws on the right front side of the machine that form a square. Remove those and take the spring clamps off the pump hoses and wire connector. Whatever water that is in the machine will come out, have a bucket or shop vac ready. The coins or other foreign objects that are in the pump can now be removed. Hope this helps
I would like to echo all of the reviews of benham. I had written off this washer prior to stumbling across this post. Instead of spending a $70 service fee plus who knows how much in parts and labor for a tech to come out, I found .35 cents in the water pump and now have an operational washer. Thanks!
I had success with these excellent instructions. One thing to add: check the pump outflow outlet. A nickel is the exact size as the opening and can get wedged in the outlet. It won't rattle or make noise to tell you it's in there.

Benham's advice is one of the most useful pieces of information that I've ever found on the web. I was envisioning big service $$, if not a dead washer, but following the steps, I was able to get out the quarter (and penny) in the pump. Fantastic advice!!
A few points, however.
1) You don't need to tip the washer entirely on its side, but you need to tip it enough that you can access the bottom of the washer.
2) It's not trivial to get the plastic cover off the bottom of the unit. However, if you fiddle with it enough, you'll eventually get it off.
3) My MAH2400 had five screws on the bottom, not four. That's a pretty obvious issue to deal with.
4) If the coins have been in the pump for a long enough time, it may have chewed up the pump blade. If you're able to get the coins out, then you can also replace the pump. The following link provides a source for a replacement part:

Use Benham's advice, and also take apart the drain pump. There are three screws to do so. It's really easy.

The pump, attached to the hoses with springs. Press the prongs of the springs together and move away from the hose ends. Make sure you have a large pot or something to catch the water. The drain pump. I've already unscrewed the three screws. I did this over a cake pan to catch the water.
The opened pump. Not shown: evil bobby pin that was keeping the pump from spinning. Remove the obstruction, give it a good wipe then do all these steps in reverse.

Elainekwok37's images helped a ton when combined with the posts above. You all saved me a day off from work and a bunch of cash!
Tip: Make sure to make note of the pump covers position with respect to the actual pump motor. It isn't keyed in any specific position so make sure when you reassemble you have the intake and output tubes in the right directions. If you make a mistake at this point you won't be able to remount it properly under the washing machine.
I had asked for help with a nasty noise when my front loader [maytag] was draining and thanks to your help I removed the pump and found 3 quarters in side, it did not do any damage and the washer is A OK. Thanks so much.
I wish to extend a HUGE thanks to Benham and elainekwok37! Our Maytag-MAH24 began making this terrible noise and the first posts I saw made me think it was bad bearings -- a very expensive fix. Fortunately, I searched again and saw these posts on fixya and, sure enough, a quarter was stuck in the pump. The whole fix took less than a half hour. As my wife said: Now we don't have to buy a new machine and we are 25 cents richer! Thanks again!!

Having same problem. Sounds as if there is/are coin/s in the pump but after pulling off the front cover, there are no screws that form a square on the right side. The entire front cover is attached and riveted making it appear that it can only be accessed by removing rear panel on machine. I had fixed my HE2 pump from the front, but can't even find the pump on this machine. Anyone know exactly where to look/how to remove the pump?
We had the same problem and followed the instructions to remove a quarter and a nickel from the pump. THANK YOU for the clear directions. It made fixing this problem a cinch and my husband and I were easily able to fix this ourselves w/out having to waste time and $$$ on calling a repair person.
We had the same problem and found a quarter in the pump. Although our model had a few extra screws the images were very helpful for being able to identify the various parts. Thank you for not charging to show us this answer like other sites want to...we were able to do everything in under 30 minutes!
