I may be getting into this question late or after the fact but will leave my thoughts. I have a canon S5 that I have hardly used because I normally use my Canon D model for its many lens options. One day I went to use the S5 and the flash wouldn\'t fire. I spent hours on the settings and finally laid it aside and unpacked the D which I had already packed for a trip. In the case of my S5 , turned out that little black plastic cover that was slid in the hot shoe slot was keeping the flash from firing. I did not investigate why. All I do know is when I slide that cover out of the hot shoe the flash fires, if the cover is in the hot shoe the flash wont even show up in the view let alone fire. Make sure you slide the small black plastic square out of your hot shoe slot the try the flash .
Before you give up on the camera:
There are many setting that can affect whether the flash works or not.
You may have inadvertently set something that is stopping the flash from working.
Get out your User Manuals and use the index at the back of the book.
Look for something about "Resetting the camera".
This will reset the camera to factory specifications.
Then see if the flash works.
If that does not work ... recharge the battery and try again.
If that does not work, the flash is likely dead.
