I have a Fisher RS-717 stereo receiver, amplifier. The speaker connections are channel A left & right and channel B left & right. The question is, can you connect speakers to just one channel without connecting speakers to the other channel? Seems like I have heard doing that will do something bad to the unused channel, like burn it out.

Determining the Cause of the Problem Let's assume our system has a head unit, a crossover, a two channel amplifier and two door speakers with only the right speaker working (the left speaker is not working). If the door speakers are behind the door panels then we want to make sure the speaker is the problem before removing the panel. We'll work backwards starting with the amplifier and ending at the head unit. Testing for a Speaker Problem With the vehicle and the stereo turned off disconnect the speaker wires for both the left and right speakers at the amplifier. Now connect the left speaker to the right amplifier output (which we know works). Turn on the stereo system and make sure the balance is set to the middle position.If the speaker still doesn't work then the problem is somewhere between the amplifier and the speaker Testing for an Amplifier Problem Now we'll need to see if the amplifier channel is bad. Put the left speaker back on the left amplifier channel and the right speaker on the right amplifier channel. This returns the speaker wiring to its original configuration. Again, with the vehicle and stereo off unplug the RCA cables from the amplifier's input and switch them so the left cable is in the right input and vice versa. Turn on the stereo system. Testing for an RCA Cable Problem For any intermediate components between the amplifier and the head unit follow these steps for each one. We only have a crossover so we'll just do this once. Begin by testing the RCA cables between the intermediate component and the amplifier. Unplug both RCA cables from the intermediate component's output. Now plug the working channel's RCA cable into the non-working side of the crossover. In our case the working channel is the right so plug the right RCA cable from the amplifier into the left side of the crossover. Turn on the stereo system.
If the right channel continues to work then you know the problem is in the RCA cables between the amp and the crossover. esting for a Crossover or Equalizer Problem At the input of the intermediate component (in our case the crossover) flip the RCA cables around (left to right input and vice versa). Turn on the stereo system.
If the right channel continues to work and the left channel continues to not work then you know the problem is in the intermediate component. Replace or repair this component.
If the problem is now in the right speaker and the left speaker works then the problem lies before the crossover. Turn off the stereo system and return the RCA cables to their normal places.
Testing for a Head Unit or RCA Cable Problem Pull out the head unit from the dash so you can access the RCA cables. Unplug both RCA cables from the head unit. Do not disconnect any other wiring. Plug the right RCA cable into the left channel of the head unit. Turn on the stereo system.

Option 1: Adding a Separate Power Amplifier - Best Option

1) Connect the pre-out main left and right to the EQ901 inputs 1 and 2, and the EQ901 outputs 1 and 2 to the power amplifier inputs left and right
2) Connect your 901 speaker to the power amplifier outputs
3) The equalized signal will now play through the front left and right speaker outputs in the stereo and home theater modes.

Depending on the model, there are two ways to connect a subwoofer to an amplifier, receiver or processor. The best way is to connect the subwoofer to the SUB OUT or LFE output of a receiver, but some subwoofers can be connected to the speaker level outputs of the receiver or amplifier.


1. How to Connect a Subwoofer to the Subwoofer Output


The preferred method of connecting a subwoofer is through the LFE or Subwoofer output (SUB OUT) of a receiver. Almost all home theater receivers (or processors) and some stereo receivers have a subwoofer output. The LFE (Low Frequency Effects) is a special output for subwoofers and is often labeled 'SUBWOOFER' not LFE. 5.1 channel programs on DVD discs have a dedicated .1 channel output with bass-only content that is best reproduced by a subwoofer. Connect the output of the LFE or Subwoofer jack to the Line In jacks of the subwoofer using a single RCA cable (the two jacks on the left in the photo). A 'Y-Cable' may be necessary to connect the LFE output to both the left and right channels of the subwoofer.

2. How to Connect a Subwoofer to Speaker Level Outputs
Some receivers and amplifiers do not have an LFE or Subwoofer output. In this case you can use the speaker outputs of the receiver to connect the subwoofer. Using speaker wire, connect the left and right channel speaker outputs of the receiver to the left and right channel speaker level inputs on the subwoofer (the speaker inputs on the right side of the photo). Using speaker wire, connect the left and right channel speaker outputs on the back of the subwoofer to the left and right channel front speakers.

4 speaker wires, black, green, red, white ;speaker left +speaker right +speaker left -speaker right. First see what pair of speaker wires go to left the channel of the amplifier. One of each speaker must be connected to each amplifier´s channel, no matter of colors of the wires. Two wires for each speaker to each channel of the amplifier (rear panel + and -). Then you will have 4 wires connected to 2 stereo channels of your amplifier. Two wires for each speaker.

The amps are located inside the radio. Most in-dash receivers that provide for "pre-amp outputs" also called "low level outputs" do so by providing female RCA type jacks. These are often found at the end of a short (4 - 6 inch) cable and are usually color coded red & white or red & black (some receivers provide a yellow RCA jack for video in / out, too). To use these RCA audio jacks, you need to realize that one jack is for the left channel source and the other is for the right channel source for a stereo signal. You will have to connect a compatible plug and cable of enough length to extend to a remote amplifier's RCA input jacks. The vehicle's speakers would also need to be connected directly to the same amplifier's output terminals. Using the two audio (left and right) RCA jacks will only allow the radio to control balance of the left and right audio, no fader (front and rear) control is possible. To get fader control, you'd have to either have a radio with four RCA low level output jacks (front L & R *and* rear L & R), or use the radio's speaker (or high level output) wires and connect them to the amplifier's speaker (or high level) input terminals.

All unused receiver wires should be terminated in a wirenut or securely wrapped in electrical tape to prevent accidental contact with grounded metal or other wires behind the dash.

The only thing that hooks to the stereo are a remote cable should be labeles on the amp. and the rca cables (red and whites) the different channels go to different sets of speakers.right to right left to left. make sure your amp is grounded well or you'll throw the fuse. The solution is simple and cheaper than you think.

The analog 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 outputs on your receiver should be active even with digital inputs that you want to hear. Your receiver turns everything it processes into analog output just before the speakers anyway so there's no loss of access to multichannel sound this way.

What I did was to buy a separate amp for the 901's and feed the Front L&R analog audio out to the EQ which is directly in front of the amp. The Active EQ is only for the 901's which don't have woofers or tweeters so Bose flattened out its final response electronically with some serious boosting at both ends. Having it in line with any other speakers would feed them a grossly over-compensated signal.

Your receiver will drive the rest of the speakers.

This is the cheapest way to have your 901's and hear them, too. Since the 901's are really efficient you don't have to buy a big amp that would heat the room. I'm using a separate Carver amp with 2x100w for mine.

If you have a 4 channel amp and 4 speakers and each speaker is connected to each of the 4 channels you are just fine.
A stereo amplifier has 2 channels, typically labeled left and right and each channel has an amplifier. A 4 channel amplifier has 4 amplifiers. With one speaker on each channel, there is one speaker on each amplifier. Audio amps are referred to as amps or amplifiers, although if they have more than one channel it would be more correct to call them something like 'multi-channel amplifier' or 'multi amplifier speaker driver'. Semantics.
