IE8 problem Shortly after upgrading to Windows 7, and installing Internet Explorer 8, the latter stopped working. I went to uninstall it and reinstall but it doesn't show up in the list of programs for uninstalling in Control Panel. I am also getting this message when I boot up the computer each morning which may be connected. (I am using Chrome which works fine.) "There was a problem starting C: Windowssystem32sshnas.dll The specified module could not be found."

I went to Program files and internet explorer but do not see "Uninstall" which is the option I want to take. Please let me know where it is.

I don't want to reinstall the os in case i lose stuff.

I need to get it sorted even though I use another browser because I don't want the annoying message to come up every day.

Also, IE is the only browser I know of that allows you to create a shortcut straight onto the desktop which is something i continually like to do. You put something in "Bookmarks" and it's like filing information away - you forget it's there.

I have a good anti-virus program in Avast! So I can't imagine the problem arose due to a virus.

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2009

can I simply put Windows 7 disk in and hit a "repair" option? I really don't want to move all my programs.

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2009

"any device that its aded probably will have to be reinstalled and the network too ..but instead you wil have all data on ...it will replace just system files..."

This sounds way too time consuming - I wanted to know if I can just target this problem and not have anything else done to my existing system. Sounds like not. Sorry but I can't accept the solution.

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2009

    I need an easier fix.

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2009

How do I do this - "system restore to an earlier point in safe mode" ?

If I do this, I will lose a lot of the stuff I put on my pc since that time, right? I'm really not into having to reconstruct all that - it took me weeks to put it altogether after the complete upgrade install of Windows 7 I did only a few weeks ago.

I deleted the file as you suggested.

Is there no simple way to uninstall and reinstall IE8?

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2009

"Windows components" does n't exist in the dialogue box. As i explained earlier, no other browser enable you to simply put a shortcut onto your desktop from any webpage which is why i keep IE around.

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2009

I just tried "Save as" in Chrome but it puts a folder full of many files on desktop. I simply want the link to open the page directly as in IE. How do you get that?

I'll try reinstalling IE 7..... Thanks, Mara

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2009

When you save the page, select SAVE AS... and select Web Page, Just HTML in you desktop.

So, in this way just save the direct link to this site.

I just tried that and the image links are all broken.

I would continue using chrome or firefox. I would wait til more updates come out for windows 7 and IE. Also that file you are referring to is a trojan/virus so you may want to reinstall a fresh copy of windows and get antivirus software on there immediately.
Thank you,
Lee

Try system restore to an earlier point in safe mode and if u have no system restore points ur only option is System Recovery. However files need to be backed up as System Recovery deletes all your documents, music, videos...

Look in the registry:
- Regedit >Find > and type the name: sshnas.dll
- See if it is there, delete the key if found

Also other users talk about DLL message HERE

Hope helped with this.

    Try this one:
    - START>> then SETTINGS>> then CONTROL PANEL>> then ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS
    - Select ADD OR REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS>> SELECT INTERNET EXPLORER

First uninstall it and then install it again.

Other way, switch to Firefox, it's faster and safer.

You are missing a file ...and the computer can not start ...the program ...try to roll back from the system restore...or better reinstall the operating system ...if it came right after installing it means that either is not compatible ..( windows 7 still have issues ...also explorer 8 ) .....
anyway ..if you do not have time and meanings to do it right the way ...just install another browser like Mozilla Firefox and use it until u will be able to do it ...
also might be a bug ..that forced the protection programs to remove a system file along ...anyway this can be done if you just restore to a previous date when it worked...or just put in the windows cd ..and repair...it will reload the files for the system ...
( I will go for reinstalling in your place )
this week i kept hearing about issues like that and I think that it was a virus that done that ....so ....better reinstall format C partition ...and get an antivirus ..at least a free one like AVG 9 that works wonders with windows7
remember quick fix...install another browser...Firefox; opera ' comet bird...they are faster and simpler anyway ...
another thing you cab do is to roll back the explorer ..it will be in the program files and has a uninstall there ..but the problem will have more than half chance to stay on ...even with explorer 7 or 6 ...

ok ..if you didn't got any uninstalling ..this means that you do not have any update to internet explorer..cause any update you make ..like 7 or 8 it is [resent into the add/remove programs...
anyway you can still check into add remove programs but move the side buton to the one that says remove windows content .....
all browsers allow you by right click to save a file to the desktop ...and even the ones that are already saved in explorer will change if you change properties to open with another ..or ..to change the main broser in start ..program access or default.....
so this should not be a problem ...
I believe that you didnt understood be first ...the message you get is from windows trying to locate a file ..and didnt get it .....so ...either go to start up in ( run: Msconfig than choose the start ...and eliminate the file that contain those files...) the thing is complicated..so this is why I proposed you to try another browser...
Im sure that after you set the mozilla like the main broser ..and eliminate the access to explorer from the "set program access and defaults in the start menu ...it will not look for that file anymore......the thing to do is just choose non microsoft ...or manually check another browser as first choice...
anyway ..in case of missing files from the system you can not do anything biut repair the operating system or compromise my using as it can be used...
also see if the message from the start has a case that allow you never to show that message again ..

  • Catalin Turcu
    Catalin Turcu Nov 23, 2009

take a better look in the add /remove programs ...( control panel) if you have explorer 8 ..that got to be there ...and ca be uninstalled..if its not it means you do not have it ...and its just 6 ...cause 6 is the only one that do not shows there

  • Catalin Turcu
    Catalin Turcu Nov 23, 2009

BTW /only if you reinstall clean the operating system loose data ..if you move all you have into another partition but C ...you can reinstall safely ...anyway if you choose repair ...it just repairs the system files and you do not loose any data ...another thing ...I believe that because explorer 8 came with windows 7 from the start thats the problem that makes it invisible in the remove program......so ...try to restore to an earlier date when it was functional ..it might work ...or ..repair ..its faster than if you try for hours to get a fix that I personally do not gave a 5 % chance ..windows 7 its installing in about an hour and so ...and a few programs you use another half...and if you choose just repair you do not have to install programs again

  • Catalin Turcu
    Catalin Turcu Nov 23, 2009

yes ..this it what I was talking about ,,,when you repair it will keep drivers files and all ...be careful on the options ..and choose to repair the same installation if you want to keep the programs ...anyway windows 7 cames with drivers for most of the devices...any device that its aded probably will have to be reinstalled and the network too ..but instead you wil have all data on ...it will replace just system files....and if any problems were caused by that missing file that windows can not find at start ..this will be fixed..by this action ..and its faster that struggle for hours with finding out whats wrong and where

  • Catalin Turcu
    Catalin Turcu Nov 23, 2009

ok ..do how you think is best ...but this will not fix what ever you have faster ...anyway ...I suggested at least 5 ways to get rid of the problem ...be sure that you will not end up without files ..cause if its a bug like I suspect it will spread..and Im not sure its that cool ....Take care and have a nice day !

  • Catalin Turcu
    Catalin Turcu Nov 23, 2009

all browser can open a saved on desktop page if set as default program for that kinda file ....and more..in all browsers I use...3 of them when I right click on tha page ..it opens a menu that has a feature to save page as ...and than just choose desktop and save ..you can even name it ...
anyway the thing to do is try to reinstall the explorer ..I looked over that net and it doesnt have explorer 8 for windows 7 ...maybe incompatibility is the problem and it strats with updateing ....try to install explorer 7 for vista ..it might be compatible ...try even reinstaling over the explorer 8 for vista ....most drivers for vista work in 7 so it might repair it ...

  • Catalin Turcu
    Catalin Turcu Nov 23, 2009

yeah try it ..it might work ..even if it is a downgrade...choose manually ..but it also might say that your computer has already a newer version ..and offer to delete if continue..and it might fix problems...the thing is that I think explorer 8 it doesnt have a version for windows 7 cause i didnt find any download even on microsoft site ...try with the one made for vosta ..they are about the same ...

  • Catalin Turcu
    Catalin Turcu Nov 23, 2009

indeed it does that ...anyway ..if you have another made in explorer it will show on the desktop only the file itself ..and if you change properties to open with ...... it will do so ...for the new ones if you will not be able to fix it ...just clic on that folder ..and (save complete ) properties and hiden ...aply and ...Voila...
the issue is that being a windows program ..the explorer does the same thing but it has its own folders in the system where it puts the rest of the information..this ones just makes a folder for ...
I wait news about how it worked when ya try to reinstall explorer ..tell me if you need a lick for download

Replace internet explorer 8 with internet explorer 7

You need to find the old installation files for IE7, uninstall IE8, install IE7 and then make sure that automatic updates are switched off, otherwise Windows will update it to IE8 again automatically.

Are you sure you want to use IE7? IE8 is more secure.

In fact, Firefox is much more secure and faster than either IE7 or IE8.

Ever since upgrading to Internet Explorer 8, I find that I cannot print emails, open up many attachments, and retrieve other information. For example, if I click on a link, I get the following message:...

Ther are known conflicts with Vista and IE8 - particularly with Vista 64-bit.

I would suggest uninstalling IE8 and reinstalling IE7 or using an alternative browser such as "slimbrowser" (excellent program) or similar.

IE8 can be uninstall by using Add or Remove Programs module in Windows XP, but in Windows Vista, Windows Internet Explorer 8 is not considered to be a ‘program’. Instead, IE8 is categorizing as an ‘update’. Thus, users will not be able to find Windows Internet Explorer 8 in “Programs and Features” of Windows Vista.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, go to Control Panel, and click on Uninstall Programs link or Programs and Features icon. Then on Tasks pane on the left, click on View installed updates link. Locate and select Windows Internet Explorer 8 in the list of installed updates, and then click on Uninstall button. Click on Yes when asked that are you sure want to uninstall the update.

If there is no option of IE8 been found on “Programs and Features” or “Add or Remove Programs” dialog box, or uninstallation of Internet Explorer 8 is unclean (causing error message such as setup cannot continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer has been detected on this computer when trying to downgrade to IE7), try to manually run the spuninst.exe.
To do so, go to C:\WINDOWS\ie8\spuninst\ folder (your drive letter may be different), and run spuninst.exe.

Restart the computer after uninstallation completed.

Hope that helps :)

Installed IE8 and I hate it, want to go and reinstall IE7

Try uninstalling IE8 and it should put IE7 back in. Failing that uninstall 8 then 7 then update to 7. Of course if they want you to use 8 then they probably took 7 off the udate page. Then you could backup hard drive, re-install windows, put in the service packs and get back to IE7. Option 3: learn to live with 8.
