I need to know the correct way to hook up dvd player. The best I can get is sound from the dvd but no picture on the television. Panasonic DVD home theater sound system Model # SC-HT700

What kind of cables are you using to hook up the DVD to the TV? Are they they composite, component, or S-Video? What are the connectors you're plugging both ends of the cables into labeled? Are you plugging the audio cables into the TV or directly into the sound system?

OK, composite cables are the red, white and yellow cables. The red and white are used for audio and the yellow is for the video. You should connect the red, white, and yellow cables to the appropriate color jacks on the back of the DVD player. The connectors should be labeled output (if they're labeld at all). You might want to give me the make/model of your DVD player so I can look up the manual to see what connectors are on the back.
You should run these cables to your TV and hook them to the back of your TV and plug them into the appropriate colored jacks on either the number 1 or number 2 input. If you don't have your TV manual, you can get it here:

If you have a cable box it may already be hooked up to input number 1. In that case just plug the DVD into input 2. If both 1 and 2 are already used let me know.
Your TV supports input from a variety of sources. When you want to watch one of those inputs (cable box, DVD player, VCR) you need to "tell" the TV that's the input you wish to watch. If you plugged your DVD player into input number 2 you'll need press the TV/Video button on your remote control until the TV shows you it's selected input is Video 2. If you used input 1 for the DVD then you would want to use Video 1. The TV/Video button will sequentially step through all the various inputs. Many of them will most likely be blank because there is nothing connected.
Give this a shot and let me know if you have more questions. If you've hooked everything up properly and you're still getting only audio then there may be a problem with your DVD player, TV, or cables.

I forgot to mention that I don't get paid for this or anything...it's a strange hobby but I like to help when I can.
The red,blue,green cables are called component cables. If you DVD player has component output you will see a set of red,blue, green jacks on it. You'll need to connect the component cables at the other end to the component input on the TV. Your component input is the 2nd column of connectors from the right on your TV. There should be a total of 5 input jacks in that column. The top three are for the video and this is where you'll hook your red,blue, green cable to the appropriate color jack.
Component cables carry only the video portion of the signal. You'll need another two cables (1 red and 1 white) for the audio. They will connect to the audio output on your DVD and the audio input at on the TV (right beneath where you plugged in the component cables).
Component cables will give you a better quality signal than the simplier composite cable set. Personally I cannot see the difference. Generally composite cables come with DVD players at no additional charge. You probably paid a good amount of money for the component cables at Radio Shack. The component cables will work fine if you wish to use them, but if it were me I would take them back and use the red, white, yellow composite cables that probably came with the DVD player.
If you do decide to keep the component cables then the input you'll want to use on your TV will be labeled Input 2, Component Video.

OK, I just realized that your home theater system is the DVD player. It's playing the sound directly to your home theater system.
Please tell me exactly how you have the DVD player hooked up to the TV. What cables did you use and which jacks are they plugged into? Also, it looks like when you press the TV/Video button on your TV remote control a menu should pop up and then you get to pick the input. Is that working? What input are you selecting?
I found a "Frequently asked Questions" on the Panasonic website and the only thing it says about no picture on your Tv is to insure your component cables are connected to the correct jack on the TV and DVD player. In other words, make sure PR on the TV is connected PR on the DVD player as well as PB and Y begin on the right connection on both sides. If you've done that you should be seeing video when you select the Component input on the TV. If you don't then you have a bad DVD player, a bad cable, or a bad TV.
if you double check all these and still get nothing I would contact the store where you purchased the equipment or Panasonic.

That's great news. Now that it's working I want to confuse you some more....just joking.
I told you to connect an audio cable from the DVD player to the TV. This will allow you to hear the DVD audio through the TV speakers. I think many people who use home theater systems actually disable their TV's speakers so they will just hear the audio through the more capable home theater system speakers. When you put a DVD into your home theater system I'm sure it will automatically play the audio through it's own speakers, but when you watch TV you'll only be hearing sound from the TV itself. If you want to use your home theater speakers when you watch normal TV, you'll want to connect the red/white cable from the line-out on the TV to the line-in on the home theater system.
What ever you decide to do, I'm very happy you got the video working. I know this was a frustrating experience for you and you should be proud of yourself for sticking with it.

Since I am totally ignorant on this, I will give it my best shot. I have plugged and unplugged so much I am not sure what is what. I was told by someone at Radio Shack they were composite...whatever that means.
I don't think my cables are composite because they are red, blue and green. I have the manuel for the tv and the dvd player but it's like trying to read a foreign language. I appreciate your help and there is nothing wrong with your "strange hobby".
I did as instructed but still no picture . It seems that the tv needs to be reprogrammed to work with that DVD player. I'm still working on it. I do appreciate all of your help.
On the TV I have the red, blue and green plugged into component video input 2 and on the DVD player they are plugged into the red,blue and green. I have the red and white cable plugged directly under the r,b and green on the TV and plugged into line out on the DVD player. When I press the TV/Video button I do get a menu andI have tried using all of them. On that menu I have DVD listed under component and under Video 2 and I still can't get a picture. According to the manuel for the DVD player if I press shift+setup in order to get to the menu that would allow me to tell the DVD player what type of TV I have. That is where the problem is at this point,it doesn't show up on the TV.
Actually you did help me. It came to me at 2 this morning...since everything else was working,it had to be a bad cable. I bought new component cables and now everything is working just fine. Thank you, Thank you!!!!
Your persistence is what kept me trying. It was very frustrating but I refused to let it get the better of me. Thanks for all your help and suggestions. I think I will connect my red/white cables so that I can watch TV with surround sound.
When I hook the dvd to the components jacks using composit cables I get sound, picture, no color. If I hook the dvd up using component cables I get sound picture all blue in color. Tried adjustments in the tv menue no change. Can you help.
