Ok, so someone wiped your hard drive and installed XP on your Vista machine? Thats the best thing that could have happened to it in my opinion. :) The Vista serial # you speak of is most likely on the bottom of your machine. Once someone performs a reformat and new OS install the "restore" part of your drive is most likely gone forever. The only way to reinstall Vista at that point is to have a disk to do it with, then you will have to reinstall all the device drivers if it isnt an "upgrade" and will keep them intact..
The laptop cannot find the Operating system which is installed on your hard disk drive. Go into the BIOS (setup menu) and see if the hard disk drive is present. If it is then your might need to reload the OS ( operating system software,i.e. Winodws Vista, Windows 7 ). If the BIOS does not detect your hard drive then either your hard drive is defective or the motherboard has a problem.
Dell site should have info regarding the removal of old drive. Then install new drive in its place and install the recovery disks that you got or made. Hopefully the new drive will come with the software to prepare the drive for loading although some of the newer OS disks will do it for you.
Windows is corrupt...reload Win OS....if possible re-install Windows in a different partition say D: or E: etc (if u have more than 1 partition) and then once done let it boot from that and let Win load....take a full backup of all of your critical data to a USB pen drive....then reload Win CD in the Cd drive, switch off and switch on PC let it boot from CD and delete all partition on HD, format the disk fully and repartition the disk and load Win in C:
pls leave a feedback
If you have the original Vista DVD that came with your computer, try running startup repair on your computer using the instructions here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html
If startup repair doesn't work, make sure you have not modified system files such as authui.dll. I happened to have the same problem once on my computer :)
Try running this command in command prompt using the Vista DVD...
sfc /scannow
Turn off the Computer Turn back on and Press F11 repeatedly when the message "Press F11 to start recovery" is displayed.
The recovery will load and display a menu of options:
Full System Restore (with Backup): This options will move all Hard Disk
contents to the "c:\My Backup" directory and install a new copy of
Windows. This option preserves your existing data files, however all
applications and settings will need to be reinstalled. This option
requires 4GB of free Hard Disk space for the new OS.
Alway suggest backing up your data before you do any recovery
for xp in acer 5315 you have to load sata driver from external floppy disk with floppy and press F6 optin at starting point of xp boot disk while booting.

You need to get rid of the Vista Demo, and reload xp. You need to keep one or the other I think, you can't keep both operating systems on the same drive. What were you thinking?
Did you install the vista demo as a dual boot setup? Doesn't sound like it.
I hope someone can help you, I can't.
