Can't get my Zune software to forget my device

Had to exchange my 30GB zune due to a battery problem and bad earbuds. Store exchanged last night no problem. Only thing is I did not remove the original device from my computer before returning it (didn't know if store would give me problem or not). So come home with the new Zune (which my son wants to name same as last one) and try to select "Forget this device." Computer asks if I am sure. WHen I say yes, it comes back with a message that it can't complete it because "The relationshiip with this Zune can't be cleared right now because it's wireless settings can't be cleared. Please try again later." I can try forever with same message and no longer have the device I want removed. SO what happens if you lose or your Zune get's stolen. It is stuck on your computer forever. I read in another post here that it was due to the computer's firewall that was "misconfigured." I know nothing about messing with my firewall and just would like this device removed from the zune software. Son suggested uninstalling and reinstalling Zune software but afraid of any headaches that will bring. Right now everything works with exception that son had to choose new name for new Zune and old one still on there. Simple solution?

I did try naming it the same thing and it just appended a 1 to the name, and the old one still resided there, so I just changed the name of the new one to differ from the old to avoid confusion. It still sits there and is just an annoyance. Seems you should be able to "Forget the device" without having the old device connected. Leaving things be for the moment as don't want to attempt a software uninstall and reinstall and possible open a new can of worms. Would like to move the Zunes to a new computer in future so concerned whether I'll be able to do that.

I had to replace a Zune that was dropped in water. I didn't bother trying to get the Zune program to forget the other Zune. I just attached it and started syncing my stuff. Did you try that? BTW I named the new one the same thing as the old one with no problem.

  • Anonymous Jan 24, 2008

Unfortunately it needs the Zune attached in order to forget it. I would uninstall and then reinstall the program next. If I come across something else, I'll post again.

  • musicmovesme Apr 09, 2011

Mine went for a swim too, and every support site I found said that the "5" error message I got meant that my Zune's hard drive was a goner. I bought a new Zune. Tonight, two weeks later, on a whim, I plugged the old one back in to the computer and it started charging. Now it's just like new. Don't know why I felt like sharing that, but there you go!

Hi guys,

I will post any information I have in this thread as it becomes available. You can also monitor http://www.zune.net/en-US/support/default.htm for updates on the issue.
I can assure you that the team is working to understand and resolve the issue as soon as possible. My apologies to all of those that are affected by the problem. Thank you for your patience!

Hi guys,
I just got an update from the team that I want to share with you. Great news! It looks like this issue will resolve itself over the next 24 hours. Please read the response below. Thank you all for your extreme patience with this!

Early this morning we were alerted by our customers that there was a widespread issue affecting our 2006 model Zune 30GB devices (a large number of which are still actively being used). The technical team jumped on the problem immediately and isolated the issue: a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year. The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009. We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow (noon, GMT). By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on. If you’re a Zune Pass subscriber, you may need to sync your device with your PC to refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device.

Customers can continue to stay informed via the support page on zune.net (zune.net/support).

We know this has been a big inconvenience to our customers and we are sorry for that, and want to thank them for their patience.

Q: Why is this issue isolated to the Zune 30 device?
It is a bug in a driver for a part that is only used in the Zune 30 device.

Q: What fixes or patches are you putting in place to resolve this situation?
This situation should remedy itself over the next 24 hours as the time flips to January 1st.

Q: What’s the timeline on a fix?
The issue Zune 30GB customers are experiencing today will self resolve as time changes to January 1.

Q: Why did this occur at precisely 12:01 a.m. on December 31, 2008?
There is a bug in the internal clock driver causing the 30GB device to improperly handle the last day of a leap year.

Q: What is Zune doing to fix this issue?
The issue should resolve itself.

Q: Are you sure that this won’t happen to all 80, 120 or other flash devices?
This issue is related to a part that is only used in Zune 30 devices.

Q: How many 30GB Zune devices are affected? How many Zune 30GB devices were sold?
All 30GB devices are potentially affected.

How do I restore my devices firmware for my zune 30gb

How to restore your Zune device software:------------
When you restore your Zune device software, the startup partition and the data partition are removed and rebuilt. In addition to removing the Zune device software, this process also erases all audio, videos, podcasts, and pictures that are stored on the Zune device.
Warning To restore the Zune device software, you must have a Windows-based computer that has an Internet connection. That computer must have the Zune software installed. And you must be able to connect the Zune device to a USB port on that computer by using a Zune Sync Cable. Do not perform the following steps if you do not have any one or more of these things immediately available.

After you start to restore the Zune device software, you cannot again use the device until you complete all the steps. You will not receive any confirmation or warning on the Zune device after you start the following procedure.

To restore the Zune device software, follow these steps:
1. Set the Hold Switch to unlocked.
2. Press and hold the Back button at the same time as you press and hold the top of the Zune Pad. When the Zune device begins to power up, release the buttons.
3. Immediately after you release the buttons in step 2, press and hold the following special button combination, depending on your Zune model:• If you have the 4GB Zune, the 8GB Zune, or the 80GB Zune, immediately press and hold the Back button at the same time as you press both the left side of the Zune Pad and the Play/Pause button. Continue to hold these buttons until your Zune device restarts and "Please wait" appears on the screen.
• If you have the 30GB Zune, immediately press and hold the Back button at the same time as you press both the left side of the Zune pad and the center of the Zune pad. Continue to hold these buttons until your Zune device restarts and "Please wait" appears on the screen.

Note "Clearing contents. Please wait" appears, followed by “Connect Zune to your PC."

4. After “Connect Zune to your PC” appears, connect the Zune device to the computer that has the current Zune software installed, and then update the device to the current Zune device software.

My Zune 30GB is frozen on the start up thing!

Disassemble and disconnect the battery for about 10 seconds. All Zune 30's apparently siezed this AM. MS is working on their solution, not sure when it will come out. The battery disconnect is at least a temp fix. Mine works fine after doing it.
