When i attempt to make a copy the printer will make the copy. But when it has completed this i get an error code 5010 on the LCD. When i want to make another copy i have to turn the computer off and then turn it back on. When i do this the printer will make the copy. But again after it's done, i again get the error code 5010. And this keeps recurring.

This is the first time it has happened, but when I did a scan on my MP830, it scanned it, saved it to the computer, then it gave me error code 5010 on the LCD.This is the first time it has happened, but when I did a scan on my MP830, it scanned it, saved it to the computer, then it gave me error code 5010 on the LCD.
Same problem error code 5010 after a document scan, printer almost useless now. Same problem error code 5010 after a document scan, printer almost useless now.
I have had the same problem as well. I opened the printer up and took a look at the inside. If you can not resolve these errors with the above tricks, it is time for a new multifunction printer. All and all I can not complain. I have had my Canon printer for 2 years 8 months and today was the day that it died. I looked back and I paid back in 2006 about ~$280. Which if you think about how long it lasted me and the amount of scanning and printing that I got out of it, not bad at all. Just time for a new one. Maybe I will try the Canon Pixma MX850. Reviews so far are pretty good.

I got the error code 5010 today (scanner lock switch). I called Canon. The printer's electrical circuitry (brain) needs to be refreshed. This is similar to wireless routers and other devices.
They directed me as follows:
1. power OFF the printer
2. Unplug the printer's power cord from the electrical source.
3. Wait AT LEAST 1 minute - no less than 1 minute.
4. After 1 minute, plug-in the printer to the electrical source. Turn on the printer - wait for it to warm up as usual and it should be ok.
Mine worked perfectly after the above steps. - Hope this helps.
I was having the same problem but now it is solved. The same trick worked for me, you need to move the switch that you can see after you open the scanner cover on the left side on the UNLOCK position!!!
This error code can indicate that the scanner is locked--or that the machine "thinks" it's locked, because the carriage is not moving as freely as it should. (The scan lock switch is purely mechanical, so moving it back and forth will do nothing.) After unplugging it, take the machine apart enough to remove the glass platen. (If you can't figure out intuitively how to unscrew and unsnap each part to accomplish this, have a more mechanically-inclined friend do this for you.) With the platen removed, lightly lubricate the rails upon which the carriage rides, as well as the gears, using a silicone spray. Move the carriage back and forth manually several times to spread the silicone. Reassemble and you're back in business.
If you are getting this it relates to the scanner. if the lock is on, release it and problem solved. if the lock is off however then you might be up for a new scanner unit, in which case, time for a new printer cause repairs would be more than a new one! i know, cause i fix these pieces of ****!

The 5010 error indicates a scanner error. The scanner unit cannot detect the home position, or the scanner unit warming-up is not done properly at power-on. On the LCD, "Scanner is not operating correctly." is displayed.
The 6100 error indicates a logic board error. The check sum value is incorrect in the ROM check at
hard-power-on.
Fixing these errors is more expensive than replacing the printer. Sorry.
Fixing F
Error [5010] may appear after the printer is powered on or when attempting to make a copy or scan. This can happen if an IC on main board of the printer is either malfunctioning or has corrupt data in it.
To confirm if this is due to corrupt data, try clearing the memory by resetting it.
1. On the operator panel, press and hold the <ON/OFF> button for one second. (The display will go blank.)
Note: It may be necessary to unplug the power cord if pressing the ON/OFF button does not shut off the printer.
2. Wait approximately ten seconds and then press the <ON/OFF> button again. (or plug back in)
3. Wait until the device has completed its cycling process before submitting another job request.

Error Code 5010: Canon recommends resetting the machine. Unplug the power cord for 10 seconds. Then press the power button to turn the printer back on. Wait until the device has completed its cycling process before submitting another job request.
Yes, same thing happens to me...Error code 5010...and flashing green and orange...alternating lights. I was trying to photocopy (in basic black, not colour). I had a few pages to copy. I got this 5010 Error code after EACH copy! I had to turn off the printer after each copy and then turn it back on for the next copy. That's not the worse of it.....once I turned the printer back on and hit copy again...the printer took a VERY long time to scan the item for the next copy. It took me a good 40 minutes to copy 15 pages. Sooooo irritating!!!!!
Anyone know what to do?
I've also had the paper jam on me tons of times. I am really disappointed with this product. I would not recommend this printer to anyone!
