Issue: ERROR: Service error 5100 appears while printing from the computer
1. Allow print head to cool down
2. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable to ensure a secure connection
3. Press ON/OFF switch to reset the multifunction device
4. Reseat ink cartridge (MP160 / MP180 / MP460)
5. The MP160 may require repair
Try the above... and you also can see this on the canonusa web site....
5100 says the carriage is not free to move all the way left and right, or there is ink or grease on the encoder strip, the plastic strip behind the carriage assembly. You can clean the strip with a Q-tip just damp with water.
5100 is a carriage error, make sure there is no paper stopping the carriage from moving right to left, and then clean the encoder strip, behind the carriage, carefully with a damp Q-tip. Usually grease gets on the strip and gives you that error.

Driver could be corrupt. Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off.
I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with
the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the
printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud
5100 is a carriage error, check the timing strip for contamination (plastic strip about 1/4" in width). This error means that there is something obstructing the printing
process. (the side to side motion) Check inside your printer through the gears that you can see
under the lid. There should be something obstructing the gears such as
dirt or maybe built up crud. Once there was even some paper caught underneath
the rollers that I had to jiggle around to even see. Check VERY
thoroughly. A dab of alcohol on a qtip works great to remove built up ink, dirt, etc.
I Have the same problem. Greece. This is the second services and I a lot overwrought with this instrument. Him I was deprived 2 times and now one more time will again make installation of other instrument for the time of repair. Rather I will reverse the sale in order to I finish with problems with canon.
