You need to remove the black/yellow printhead and dab it on a damp paper towel until you see a solid line of black ink on the towel when you press it. It won't pass the alignment until all colors work properly.

The other thing that helps alignment is cleaning the encoder strip. The clear strip that runs behind the carriage assembly. A damp Q-tip can help remove ink and grease spots and on the right of the carriage at the bottom is a sensor that looks down at the paper also use a q-tip to clean the led and lens.

I have to ask this if only to rule this out.

Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
If you are using factory new cartridges, then please call the manufacturers Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

The "they do this" part is bs. They have logic to prevent other manufacturers because the whole profit margin is in ink cartridges. That's why they practically give the printers away - to lock you into their ink.

Allignment failed

Defects to align the cartridges tend to happen when the scanner can not detect the page. Check the scanner and see if it is working properly.

"alignment failed" message. Prints

First, try power cycling the printer (Turn it off, wait 5 sec, turn it on). If this does not resolve the issue, try removing the cartridges and reinserting them carefully.

First, make sure that the new cartridges are hp ones, and then make sure the tape is removed. I've done this before by accident, where I put a new cartridge in and it had the tape on it and didn't get output that way.

If you still have problems after trying the above steps, maybe try the following link:

unless you are printing and choosing black only, the printer uses the color cartridge also. Go into advanced settings and choose black only. If not you may try and replace the color cartridge, or return the cartridge, it might be defective.

Only prints in yellow color

The printer must be able print all colors in order to execute the alignment. Part of the alignment process involves scanning printed colored (all colors including yellow) bars. See the web page below for a sample of the printout. I suggest that you clean the carriage and cartridge electrical contacts with a cotton swab moistened with water. If you still fail to get yellow, test the cartridge in another printer. ping me for the make of printer, anyways if it an HP series refer to the website below

HP officejet pro l7680 all in one

Most likely the print head has failed and the black is not printing which is causing the printer to have issues. Talk to HP as I guess printheads have warranty or simply change the yellow/black printhead. Or if all of these fail give the machine to HP to get you a new one as this is not right. I hope this helps.
