I had the same issue with a Gateway DX4300-9 desktop. The computer appeared to halt after a few minutes. Monitor would go black and no hard drive activity. I went to the BIOS and changed two settings:
1. Like an article on Vista Forum stated - changed video to Onboard - was set to PCIE
2. Another setting to Halt on "All errors - but Keybord" was set. Changed to "No Errors".

It seems to be working fine now.

It is under warranty. Call Gateway, as you may need to have it replaced if the computer is just powering off. That is normally a sign it is overheating. You paid for this warranty so avail yourself of this service.

Screen says to reboot, have no reboot device, unable to doanything to this computer, only 2 years old.have called my internet co.andmicrosoft. they tell me computer is atfault. please help

Gateway is responsible for any hardware issues with your computer. Neither the internet service provider nor the operating system manufacturer has anything to do with the hardware. Your Gateway has a power on button on its case. You may have to hold the button in for several seconds to shut it down but as you have not accessed the OS, that won't harm the hard drive. Once it's shut down, repress the power button to turn it back on and hopefully it will power up completely to the Windows or Linux OS you are using.

I have had a variety of problems since 2007 a few months after I puchased this gateway laptop from HSN. Big mistake. Customer service for Gateway is terrible! The battery will not charge, screen fails...

Let's think about this. The computer is 3 years old, probably running Vista. It needs a new battery, not surprising on a 3 year old system. The screen doesn't work for some reason.
A battery & screen will run you $150-200. It may still have a problem.
A new computer with Win7 is $400-500.
I know what I would do.

Laptop randomly shuts down and shows a blue screen saying

Make sure you don't have any unecessary programs loading up into windows when your laptop boots up. The next time the system randomly reboots check to see if the laptop feels a bit warmer then normal. Could be that your air vents are being blocked by dust. That would cause the air not to flow properly. Take a can of air and blow the vents clear so the air can flow properly and that would take care of the problem.

M-series gateway (m1629) press start button, nothing

Taken apart, looking for abnormal solder etc checked powers switches decided that this unit was acting like it may have shut down due to excessive heat issue. pulled battery on board, tested ok, re-installed everything and found that this unit now is active. Conclusion: I suspect the bios shut this unit down, hard reset correct this issue.

Gateway notebook m1624-shuts off randomly by itself

Check if your laptop is hot on the bottom left corner. If it is hot that means that the cpu thermal past is dry out. I have to sent in to gateway 5 times for the same shut down problem while it was still in warranty. The gateway m-1624 has a poor cooling unit. I hope that help you.

Gateway 7405 GX Fully shuts down at random intervals

It sounds like a thermal shut down when the processor over heats, one thing it might be is that the heat sink is not seated properly on the processor. When removing the heat sink make sure you have thermal paste to place between the processor and heat sink. That should give you a good starting point.
