The belt is probably worn and slipping, that is why it smells. Here is a link to the owners manual which has instructions and a link to the belt you need.

I agree, your belt is worn and has stretched, so the motor is unable to spin the brush roll. It is a cheap and easy fix.

Hoover carpet shampooer is smoking and not working. Is the motor shot?

If it smells like an electrical fire, the motor will need replacement ( part # 43576197, msrp $74.99 ) + labor.

When running it smells like something is burning

Hi

If it smells like burning rubber, then your belt is probably slipping due to having lost tension and needs to be replaced. If it's another smell, it could be the motor burning out, but that is often accompanied by smoke. There could also be something caught around the revolving brushes in the cleaning head. Lie the vacuum on it's side and make sure you can spin the brushbar freely by hand. Also check for any debris entangled in or obstructing the brushes. This would also cause the belt to slip resulting in a smell of burning rubber. It could also damage the motor so I suggest not using the vacuum until the source of the fault has been determined.

Instructions on replacing the belt can be found in your user manual. If you don't have one or need further instruction on how to do this, please post back for further assistance.

Regards,
BElectric.

I have Hoover Widepath Bagless 12 Amp Windtunnel vacuum. Yesterday I was vacuuming and smelled smoke and it shut itself off. Today I cleaned out the filters (they weren't bad) made sure nothing was...

Hi There,

When a vacuum cleaner smokes, it is usually only one of two possible problems.

It could either be that your motor burned up, or that your belts burned. The belts on this particular model are notorious for breaking, but the fact that your machine doesn't come on at all after this happened, sounds like it may be the motor.

Both of these issues have a unique smelling smoke. If the smoke smelled like an electrical burning smell, this indicates it's your motor. If the smoke smelled more like burning rubber, then it's probably your belts.

If the smoke smelled like burning rubber, here's a video that we've recorded showing step by step how to inspect, trouble shoot, and replace the belts on your vacuum cleaner. If you open it up and the belts are still in tact, then this probably is a more serious problem of the motor burning out.

. I'd be more then happy to walk you through more advanced diagnosing if this doesn't fix your problem, please just use the comment box here on the Fixya repair page.

If this was helpful to you, please be so kind and rate my repair helpful, or leave some feedback for me. This is really appreciated by the Fixya community if the repair solution was able to fix your problem.

My eureka vacuum won't suction and starts to smoke when I try to use it. It sounds like it is suctioning when I first turn it on, but after about 20 seconds it begins to smell like burning and does not...

The problem is that your belt is stretched and worn. This causes that burning smell and it also causes the vacuum to not pick up well. You need to replace the belt. Here is the belt you need and the manual with instructions:

Burning smell and smoke

When you turn it on....is the belt turning the brushes? Something may be caught causing the brushes to stick and the belt to just grind the brush assembly.
