I am a builder. I installed my Bosch dishwasher. We are leaving our home in ME for the winter and I would like to winterize my dishwasher myself as I am tech savy. What do you recommend?

Hello Gerry, There are two (2) ways to accomplish this. The easiest is to get some RV anti-freeze (enviromentally safe version) and put that into the bottom of the dishwasher as per the instructions. Then when you return in the Spring, just run an empty rinse cycle to purge the dishwasher of the anti-freeze solution.

The other method will require you to remove (pull out from under the cabinet) the dishwasher and (with power turned off!) disconnect the sump pump boot to drain the residual water out of the unit. In some models, there is a small drain plug that you can remove to drain the water out of the bottom sump (pump) section of the dishwasher.

Good that you thought of this, as many folks forget that leaving water in their appliances in freezing conditions can cause some major headaches from burst pipes, pumps, etc. if they aren't properly winterized for the freezing temperatures they'll get in an unheated building.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

On Bosch dishwashers it is better to remove the inlet valve entirely (located at the bottom of the unit where the water intake line joins the dishwasher, usually requires a 7/8 wrench) and reinstalling it in the spring when you return. I've had to replace my inlet valve twice due inproper winterization proceedures even though I poured over a litre of RV anti-freeze and turned on the unit to distribute the anti-freeze it still was not enough.

From an internet posting ::

The purpose of the air gap is too prevent back-flow and siphoning, and newer dishwashers (past 20 + years) have back flow preventers built in and looping the drain hose (not a circle, but an upside down u to the top of the cabinet or behind/side of dishwasher) prevents siphoning. Aside form being ugly space wasters the cheap air gaps have a tendency to spit and cough water out.

Hello and welcome to Fixya.

It "smells" ( just kidding ) like you might have a problem with the way your drain hose is connected by your description.

It is crucial that your Bosch dishwasher have a siphon break or "hi-loop" installed in the drainage between the dishwasher and where it enter's your homes plumbing.

If it does not you can try different cleaners until the cows come home with little effect because the odor is coming from the drain line itself.

Was this unit installed by yourself or someone you know ? Or was it installed by a plumber/professional installer.

In the end it actually makes little difference, I'm just curious. I see professional installers as well as plumbers fail to include this crucial feature over and over.

Let me know. I'll watch for your post. If you are unclear as to what I'm referring to, check your installation guide that comes with all Bosch dishwasher's.

If you do not have any instructions regarding the proper drain/install I can email you a copy, but I would need your email address.

Good luck.
