When we turn on our Sanyo VPC E1090 digital camera the lens does not appear to come out completely & we get an "lens error 0x0311" message on the screen then it turns off. WHAT IS WRONG!! ...

If lens does not appear to come out completely and camera gives error that means lens mechanism got broken internally and lens assembly will be replaced to solve the issue.
Lens replacement is not user level repair and local camera repair shop[ will do this job for you if camera is out of warranty.
Thanks.

The words "Lens Error" appears on the viewing screen

The lens does not fully extend, that's why it tries again. The lens probably does not extend or retract because of debris or a misaligned gear box. The lens can in about 50% of the cases be repaired without having to replace it. Try to return to manufacturer first. If you're out of warranty, there are third party place that fix them such as camera lens repairs. If you want to do it yourself, there are also free camera repair guide websites that show you how to replace the lens, the replacement part is usually available on ebay.

Error 99 appears in pattern, every time

Not sure about the pattern of errors, but the advice for error 99 diagnosis is to try the following diagnosis steps to isolate the cause of the issue:-
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99" with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera is faulty and should be serviced.

Error 99

Error 99 is an "unspecified" error. It can sometimes be due to poor communication between the lens and camera. Here are some things to try:

1) Turn the camera off. Remove the memory card. Remove the lens. Replace the lens. Turn the camera on. Replace the memory card.

2) If that doesn't fix the problem, try cleaning the contacts on the lens and camera. Turn the camera off and remove the lens. Hold the lens upside down (contacts down) and gently rub the contacts with a clean pencil eraser. Be very careful to ensure that the eraser debris falls on the table and not into the lens. Repeat with the camera body, also holding it upside down (contacts down) as you clean. Replace the lens.

If neither of these work, then you need to send the camera in to Canon for repair.

Lense Error

Dear Can On:

Unfortunately only a small percentage of lens errors can be resolved on their own, such as by restarting your camera. If that doesn't work then the camera will have to be sent into the service center for repair.

Call Canon Tech Support at 1-800-828-4040 for your service options. If you are within your one year warranty and the lens error is through no fault of your own, then it will be repaired at no cost and returned to you within three weeks of mailing.

If the camera is out of warranty, or the lens error is due eto liquid, sand, or impact damage, then you would incur a repair cost. The good new is that, under these circumstances, you can take advantage of the Upgrade Program and get a refurbished upgraded A560 model for (I believe) less than the cost of the repair. Call and see.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Lens error

Hey Wiggs12485,
This error message appears when the camera detects a problem with the lens when it's turned on. This is often caused by the user pressing on the lens when it is trying to extend, or the camera is being used in a dusty or sandy environment. When this message appears turn the camera off and back on, and this should resolve your issue. If this message continues to appear you should have the camera looked at by an authorized service technician because there is probably a problem with the lens.

Sincerely,
Allan

I have error 99 in my camera canon 400d

Error 99 is a general fatal error.
which includes the problems above mentioned by Q4SteveB but also many others.

It can be caused by a dicky shutter, problems with the CF card interface.

If cleaning and trying a different lens has not worked. Not definitive but as a rule of thumb...
If it letting you take one picture then giving error 99.. and the picture is saved to the card (but may just be black) this is most likely the shutter needs replacing..

If it takes a picture and gives error 99 but there is no picture on the card or the picture is 0KB its a CF interface problem.

If you get an error 99 when you plug in the USB its a USB interface error, you can try a different cable but unfortunately in most cases if another lens or cable wont work it needs repair
