That is a common occurrence with dryers such as this one. Even though it sounds bad, it is harmless. If it really bothers, you can re-balance the load and it should reduce the vibration.
Sounds like the transmission seal had failed sometime back and has leaked the lubricant causing the transmission to overheat and now possibly seizing the gears, if this is the case the transmission will have to be replaced. Depending on the age of the washer, (5 years or less) you should contact Maytag to see if they will compensate you by way of furnishing the new transmission for free, but you will be responseable for the labor charge from a tech to do the replacement.
If they will not cover the part, you will probably be better off to replace the washer than to invest in the cost of a new trans and labor.

Your maytag is really an amana and the bearings are bad. Yes it does cost a lot. If i were you i would buy another washer. Get a whirlpool. (whirlpool now owns maytag)
