Hopefully, you're issue is long-ago resolved. If not, here is the quick simple answer. Even though you don't have a handset attached, you will get the message "handset in use" whenever the 1515 detects that the line is busy. So, if you have a phone line that is used for several faxes, or used for faxing and voice, if the fax attempts to dial out and detects that the line is in use it will display the message "handset in use" b/c there is no dial tone on the line.
Additionally, the line may not be in use anywhere else, but may just be 'down' so that no dial tone is present when the fax attempts to dial out.
This is a common issue in offices where the fax line is shared with a phone line or shared with a credit card machine (which dials out to get bank data) or just another fax machine on the same line.
Good luck!
If this appear for the first time see the follow, if this started to appear after a time of usage you will need to call a Ricoh technician, sorry but i cannot gain some help in this type of problems.
see do you use a cord with two wires or four for Ricoh when using some telephone centrals like a Panasonic it's better to use a two wired cord for the line, if this still do not help, you will need to call the telephone central technician to set the line for the Ricoh fax.
