Hi Fixya buffs, I have a fristrating issue. My Nikon d40 was working well when I used the self-timer for the first time. After a round of continuous shots on the timer, it suddenly said my memory card wasn't formatted. I lost all my pictures, but the camera formatted the card. However, one picture retaken, and my card was reading as not formatted again. Now I can't take a single picture, because my card isn't formatted, and wont stay formatted. What has happened and how cand I fix it?

Pictures can sometimes be recovered by sending the card to a service provider, or by downloading software designed to recover the pictures from the card. It is not clear weather the problem is the card or the camera, however to recover the pictures from the card would be the same process. If you do not have one you will need to buy a USB card reader to load the card on the computer. Consider buying another card to test in the camera, if you so wish. If the camera is new enough also consider contacting the manufacturer for warranty assistance. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
SOURCE: problems taking pictures with nikon d40
The reasons for this could be one of the following, or even combinations of the following:
1) Low light. Especially if the AF assist lamp is set to "off"
2) Trying to focus on an even, single-color surface (e.g. a wall)
3) If you have set the camera to AF-C autofocus mode, it will keep on "hunting" with the slightest move of the subjects, causing lag. If you're not shooting (fast) moving subjects, make sure it's on AF-S or AF-A
4) If you have added a filter on the lens (e.g. a UV filter), remove it and see if it helps

SOURCE: Nikon 4300 CF Card Erro
The Nikon Coolpix 4300 only supports the FAT16 filesystem, so it can only support a 2GB partition. To support 4GB you need a FAT32 filesystem.
Put the card in a CF writer and attached to a PC or Mac. Partition 2x2GB partitions, then format them as FAT16. Now put it into the Coolpix 4300 and it should work.
SOURCE: memory card cannot read!!!
sometimes lapstops and PCS as well as Cameras can go out of line. That is the formatting in a particular PC may not be able to be read in another.
In you case this may not be so, as the card now cannot be seen. It would have been interesting to see if it could have read it before it was formatted by your laptop. Try another card in the camera first. If no other card can be read then the problem is on the read head of the camera.
This may be just dirt or damage, and it will have to be repaired. But try another card first as the card is cheaper than a repair.
Thanlks for using FIXYA
