I just bought a Moving Star external hard drive for my Mac laptop. It came with a driver installation disc, but the CD is too small and wont be taken in by my disc drive. I am afraid to put the install disc in, in case it gets stuck. Without installing the hard drive using this disc, the hard drive shows up on my desktop but is read-only. What do i do?

I would be tempted to format the drive using the disk utility whch can be found under applications and then utilities once opened choose your drive in the left hand window and the on the right hand side click on erase. Choose your volume format and name and then erase. Hope this helps.

Could be read only because Mac cannot write to NTFS formatted drives without installing a driver. The driver is not made by apple but is used with popular distros of Linux like Ubuntu. You can download and install it for your mac from www.ntfs-3g.org I have personally used that ntfs driver since beginning of 2009 and have had no problems. Option 2 would be to format it to a different format, the most universal format is FAT32, it has once limitation, you cannot store a single file bigger than 2Gb.

HP Pavilion laptop - HDD issue?

very possible a hdd issue
you can get solid state hard drives ( far superior to disc hard drives) for around $90.00 for 125 gb
sshd drives have no moving parts , are much faster in start up and can get more data stored than a disc hard drive
KIngston brand are very reliable and can be got from the net--e-bay
Install one and use the os win 8 disc to install the os into the computer
if you don'y have a disc , you can install from the web and use the activation code you have for the disc
on installing the sshd, you will need to go into bios and change the boot from hhd to cd or external hard drive
that puts the os on to the new sshd and when that iscompleted you can then go back into bios and change to boot from external ( disc) to sshd

Does not boot, is not seen by my computer, neither Mac nor Windows PC

go into the bios on start up (alt+control+ delete) buttons all down together
find the boot section and turn on boot from cd
allow all cd units and it will find a cd ( external hard drive ) and boot up
take it to a computer shop and have them set it up
or

If your computer is working and you want an external hard drive to save to-- open the computer and with the external hard drive switched off, plug in the usb cables. turn on the hard drive and the computer will recognize it as a plug in unit and search for the correct driver
it may ask for a disc for installation or search on line ( use the disc in the cd drive in the computer)
from there the wizard will install the external hard drive

I want to format my hard disk, but i have no os installed, and my cd drive is not working so i cant install another os, what should i do?

1. Re-install CD-ROM driver, If you do not have this download the driver on a different computer and save to a disc.
2.Use an external disc drive. As computer starts up press F12 and tell the computer to boot from external device (use your os disc)

Installed new hard drive p105 s6064 now cd drive wont work dont have recovery discs

Dell recovery will not work in a Toshiba Laptop. Just make sure the boot order is set to CD/DVD driver first that will automatically start the CD/DVD driver when disc is loaded.

I have laptop hp compaq 6710b, it cannot boot completely, when i run HDD diagnosis from setup it passes the three tests successfully,if i boot it with a bootable winxp cd to repair OS, it indicates that...

The hard disk on your laptop is a SATA, which a generic XP install disk doesn't support. You will either have to create a custom XP install disk by adding to it the required drivers as explained here
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml
or you could load them to an USB stick and when prompted by the install to load external drivers from A you could reassign the A to the USB and load them from there.

My stepson said that he "re-formatted" my new Seagate Free Agent USB 2.0 500 gigabyte desktop drive on my MAC. So, now when I plug it into my computer I don't see any icons or anything? I don't know what...

If the Seagate has been re-formatted, then you will have to go through the re-install of the drive to your MAC, the drive should have come with it's own formatting tools and drivers. These external drives usually respond better with a small program that installs a set of driver tools. If you do not have the original freeagent disc, go to the Seagate support page, look up the model of the drive and download the program and drivers for that model and version.

Need help!!!

depending on the brand... you need to press a function key (F2, F9, F10, or F12 keys) to get into the BIOS and you need to change the boot sequence to start booting on your CD or DVD drive. but the operating system disc should be in the disc drive before doing this.
