HELLO THERE:
I would first get the fuel filter changed and see what this does
also you may have to get rid of this tank of fuel if the ratio is too bad from the sta bil
you may also want to change the plugs and have the injection system cleaned if this applies if not get some carb cleaner and clean it really good ok and this should get you going like it should
hope this is very helpful for you
best regards michael

Which gas tank empties first on a 2001 chevy suburban?

I'm not sure about a Suburban but I have a 2001 Chevrolet truck with two tanks and they empty simultaneously so when the gas gauge says empty that means both tanks are empty.

1987 chevy silerado truck is the fuel pump in the gas tank or where?

yes. you'll need to disconnect the fill tube that runs from where you put the gas in to the tank. Then undo the bolts that hold the metal straps that hold the tank up in place. lower the tank and disconnect the metal fuel lines from the assembly on top of the tank itself. turn the assembly cover counter-clockwise by tapping on the circular flange with a screwdriver and hammer. remove and replace the entire assembly. sometimes you can buy just the metal or plastic cyliner pump. if so you can save an awful lot of money. the entire assembly which includes the strainer and fuel gauge mechanism can cost $200-$300 , but the pump alone could be as cheap as $40. if you go the later route, take care with the fuel gauge mechanism. it is delicate...

My gas gauge fluctuates

The fuel pump and sending unit are one piece and are located inside the fuel tank. They are notorious for trouble and when one goes out, the other follows.

I ran out of gas with 1/8 showing on the gauge (the light didn't come on). Dealership said the pump for reserve fuel was out so it couldn't pump gas from the reserve section of the tank to the main...

I don't always agree with the dealership and there innovations. It does sound like you need a fuel pump. the sock or p/u tube, at the bottom of the pump has come off. GM fuel pumps are usually good for 100K+ miles but unless you can verify that the filter inside the tank is still doing its job. you may compound your problem by sending unfiltered fuel to your injectors. Good luck.
