Check the switch for the lid. the machine will not spin or drain if it thinks the lid is open. use a screwdriver or ink pen to push on the little lever. the lid has a small stick of some sort sticking out. the lever is in the hole that the stick normally goes into. the lever should click each time. if not, replace it. good luck
if your machine is washing the clothes just fine, then the problem is not the motor or the belt (if you have 1). the most likely suspect is that switch or something around it. 1 of the wires leading to it may be pulled off or broken. or the contacts inside the switch may be bad.
i suggest pulling out that switch and jumping over it with a piece of wire. you could also just tie the ends of the connections together.
if that doesn't fix it, then the problem must be within the timer mechanism. the switch is cheaper and easier to diagnose and fix. good luck

It was the lid switch. The two halves came apart which allowed the button not to engage when the door was closed. The plastic retaining pins that held it together broke. I just removed it and used a wire tie or zip strip to hold it together. Worked like a charm.
