Grind Adjustment
Tools required: Large blade and medium Phillips head screwdrivers
In order to adjust the grind, follow these steps (Refer to
figure A):
1. Remove all coffee from the hopper.
2. Set selector knob to the finest setting (Espresso or Turkish)
depending on the model.
3. Loosen both knob retainer screws in selector knob one turn only.
4. While pressing the bag switch, located behind the spout, press the
START button so that the grinder will run during adjustment.
810 model - Press the ON or START button so that the grinder will
run during adjustment.
5. With the grinder still running, turn the adjusting screw in the center
of the selector knob slowly to the right until a slight clicking noise is
heard. Immediately turn the adjusting screw to the left one grind setting. This is the finest grind obtainable.
6. Tighten both of the knob retainer screws. Once the ESPRESSO grind has been set (Turkish for Model 835,
875, 890), the other grind settings will automatically set correctly.
7. Press the STOP or OFF button.
IMPORTANT: Always be sure the grinding burrs are not touching while the machine is running on the
ESPRESSO/TURKISH setting. Otherwise serious damage to the motor may result.
You are correct, the grider positions are locked internaly so the grinder will not go too fine since this can damage the blades and also too fine need more power from motor and also can block it by rottating normaly. However you ir open the grider you can overcome the lock and udjust so the grinder can grind more fine coffee. In order to be always at the safe side just move gradualy step by step until you find the perfect grinding and adjust so that will be the minimum plus one mor move for furure adjustment if you need.
Just for reference the corect grinding is for 7 to 7.5 gr of coffee the running time of the coffee from your machine should be 25 sec for 25 cc of coffee aprox.
Good luck.

Hi
Your burr is not locked in. You need to remove the beans from the hopper. Remove the hopper. Remove the burr. Turn the grinder upside down over the trash can. Put the burr back in only make sure that the burr is down. Install the bean hopper and when you turn the bean hopper it should move the burr. Then you can adjust your grind. Make sure that the grinder is running is your going to a finer grind or you could break the grinder. You can turn it to a coarse grind any time.
This model grinder won't do espresso. There is a DIY mod available online that involves disassembling the machine, and recalibrating the burrs to produce a finer grind. I did it on mine, it was definitely better, but it's not going to get you to the coveted 30 second pull for your espresso. Search on Starbucks Barista Grinder Mod. It is a great grinder otherwise, very reliable.
Hi I would say that your grind adjustment ring is broken inside and needs to be replaced. Contact Baratza at 877-701-2021 Mon. thru Fri. 8:00 to 5:00 They should be able to help.
The Breville was designed to be used with Pressurized Portafilters, which most Home Espresso Machines have. These filters use a courser grind, so when it says Espresso on the Breville, it's really closer to Drip. The Turkish setting is barely fine enough for Espresso. There is a limiter on the Breville that prevents the user from going any finer, if you crack it open and remove the limiter, you can go as fine as the Solis. Becareful though, the burs can come so close to each other that they can chip and break.
I have a Zass and sometimes have a problem with it self adjusting, but when I do need to adjust it, I find that I have give it a good tap on the top to make sure it adjusts. So, just turn the knob counter clockwise as far as it will go, then give it a good knock on the top and bottom and try again. My mill offers the full grinding range, from a fine powder to large chunks.
Hi
Sounds like you have a broken grind adjustment ring. You should contact Baratza and see if you can get a replacement. 877-701-2021 8:00am to 5:00 PST Monday thru Friday.
Setting your dose at max and grinder at finest is not good. This means that you are asking the machine to grind coffee really fine, and then dose maximun amount which can lead to the grinder getting clogged. If you are looking for stronger coffee, it is best to have several shots that one that has too much coffe and too fine. For stronger espresso, use less water instead of more coffee. Two shots of 2 oz. espresso (made with 7 grams of coffee) are more flavorful & sweeter than one shot of 4-oz. espresso made with 14 grams of coffee which could clog your grinder and door/channel. At this point, you need to clean the grinder ( inlcuding the door/channel).
