Would you believe it.....I save important files for a masters degree on a usb in case the laptop fails.........then I drop the laptop, and the usb is bent over . Bent it back again, but computer does not recognise it. Opened it up, all appears to be intact.
How can I recover data? A right click and check of memory use shows all blank, but I'm sure it's in there somwheres! Tried data doctor but it will not scan this usb, scans everything else.
Any help gratefully accepted!

I would suggest using a program like data rescue:

They have a trial version which you can use to at least tell you if the files are recoverable - to recover the files you will likely have to pay for the product, but at $29 it's probably worth it for your information!
Try right clicking My Computer, selecting Manage... then choosing Disk Management or Removable Storage on the left hand side.
One of these should show all drive devices that are connected, whether or not they are formatted.
If nothing shows up, try another USB drive, that you know for sure works.
If your drive doesn't show up you may be out of luck.
The only other thing I can suggest is making sure that the contacts within the USB port on either side of the connection are still intact. You may not be getting a connection because one or more of the small metal contact strips inside the usb plug aren't connecting with the computer. If you can't align these, you could try soldering small wires onto them and then connecting to the computer's USB. This would be very tricky, and would require a bit of soldering skill, and a lot of patience and I wouldn't recommend it unless you've got experience fiddling with electronics. It's possible that a local computer repair shop may be willing to try this, if you explain that the information is very important.
You can try minitool power data recovery ?MiniTool Power Data Recovery contains five data recovery modules - Undelete Recovery, Damaged Partition Recovery, Lost Partition Recovery, Digital Media Recovery and CD & DVD Recovery. Each data recovery module focuses on a different data loss scenario It can recover deleted data from the Windows Recycle Bin, restore lost data, even if the partition is formatted or deleted, restore data from a corrupted hard drive, virus infection, unexpected system shutdown or software failure. It supports IDE, SATA, SCSI, USB hard disk, memory card, USB flash drive, CD/DVD, Blue-Ray Disk and iPod

tried the data rescue, no luck, it can't recognise that there is a usb in the port, let alone recover data.
My laptop is telling me it doesn't recognise the usb (but the rotten thing obviously knows there is one sitting there!) Being one of those usb's that comes with it's own software, the lexar site does not appear to have any for download.
Any other ideas?
