Had the 29 with Wilson 4" Ant. installed for a couple weeks now & everything was working great....SWR 1.2 - 1.3 across all channels. Yesterday went out and just wanted to double check SWR, set button to "CAL" keyed Mic & needle barley moved, it just stayed all the way to the left. tried a few more times & needle wouldn't move. Did a few Radio checks(loud & clear @ both ends) & working like a champ. Went out today & needle went all the way & then got to check SWR. Just checked again and needle went half way up on "CAL" and no further. What do think, bad Meter ??
My RS SWR meter only cranks up halfway to the Cal mark on the dial when I've keyed the mic and have the switch on Cal. It's only ever worked once. Is there a way to screw these things up??? Or is my radio low on power?

Weather can effect your meter .Those meters are not very accurate just a base line get a good swr meter and then check it.If your getting good radio checks it could be the potentoimeter is dirty . Radio shack sells contact cleaner and lube try cleaning it . That might help
Putting your SRF/SWR/CAL switch to the cal setting allows you to move the swr cal knob to set the radio's meter to reflect what the actual swr reading is (when taken with an inline meter).

with wilson antennas you don't have to need to run duals the proper way to adjust the SWR is to get an external meter like a trucker 2000 and a dummy load. you hook the dummy load to one antenna while working with the other and then switch the operation around. this way both antennas are matched seperatly yet work together.
if a mod has been done to the cobra 29 (all 29,s)the light will come on just find vr6 audio the radio as it comes on adjust vr6 untill it goes away,,,,always trust your watt meter(s.w.r scale)over the flashing light its really easy to do it beats paying a shop $10-$15
follow these steps to adjust the standing wave ratio(SWR). 1. Turn on the CB. 2. Set S/RF/SWR/CAL to CAL. 3. Key the Mic and rotate SWR CAL so the meter points to CAL. 4. Unkey Mic. 5. Set S/RF/SWR/CAL to SWR. 6. Key Mic again and note the actual measurement on the SWR scale. Refer to the following table to interpret the reading.
1:1 - 1.5 Great 1.5 - 2:1 OK 2:1 - 3:1 Not So Good Higher than 3.1:1 Terrible
You seem to have a short or an open circuit . Could be a PL259 connector problem, the ant. is defective and can possibly be a bad ground. Try to add an extra GND. from the ant. base to a central GND. point...This will include the power neg. lead from the radio.
PLS E. Note: If the O/P POwer shown when you key up to check SWR is higher than usual this
will indicate a definate ant. problem................GOOD LUCK and have fun learn'n ! ! !
The little wil is not a terrific antenna. I have one and I can't get it less then 1.7 no matter what I do, and I have an antenna analyzer that lets me see real time what it's tuned at while adjusting the antenna. I tried it on another vehicle and I couldn't get it under 2 swr no matter how I adjusted the antenna.
A barefoot radio should be fine with an SWR of 2 or less, however I do not like to run any radio above 1.5 SWR, and I like to get it even lower then that.
I recommend stepping up to a wilson 1000. I have been able to get every wilson 1000 I have ever tuned down to at least a 1.1 SWR. A true 1.1. You cannot get a true SWR from the meter in the radio, you need an analyzer. So if you can get it too a 1.1 on an analyzer then you have a really excellent match.
Little wil is an inexpensive antenna made for some one who is not a serious CB'r. It for the guy/gal who wants a radio for emergency. If you are planning to talk a lot on the radio, go up to at least a wilson 1000.
First thing, you need to check your SWR, you must have a SWR meter to do this. If you are a trucker, you can get it checked at any CB shack, radio shack, etc, they will check it for free. Next, make sure the antenna driven element is clear of any metal blockage, and that it is getting a good ground at the base, don't know what kind of antenna you using, but the Wilson 1000 is a good one to use, install in midle of cab.........hope this was helpful.....
When two antennae are cophased the harness should be made from 75ohm cable and then connected at the "T" then 50ohm to the radio. The spacing between the antennae is critical to the pattern of radiation and resistance of the system. If they are not the proper space apart for the length of the harness, you will not be able to tune them.
I believe it to be feedback but be aware of your Standing wave ratio because using a linear amp radiates signal to the point that it could cause that light to come on. There is a problem if the radiated signal is feeding back into the amp a a higher level that it can withstand over time.
