Why does the Oven take so long to light?

We just bought a foreclosure and I cleaned the oven really good. I know its been sitting for at least a year not being used. After turning the oven on it takes 8 or more minutes for the gas bar to light to heat the oven, do you know why? I don't know the model number.

It sounds like it might be a sticking gas control valve for the oven or the hot surface igniter for the oven might be weak. You will need to turn the oven on and off completely several times until the problem happens. When I say completely I mean turn on the oven control and watch the igniter start to glow. Then when the oven burner comes on(should within a minute) shut of the oven control and wait for the igniter to stop glowing completely and burner to shut off completely. Then repeat the process again. If you try it about 10 times and nothing happens then the problem will be difiicult to identify. If you turn on the oven control and the igniter comes on but the gas burner does not then try giving the gas control valve(located in brolier/storage compartment) a tap with a wrench. If the burner suddenly comes on then the control valve was sticking. Try repeating the shut down/turn on process again. If it does not do it again you may have fixed the problem...if it does you will need to remove the igniter and test it with an ohm meter(should read at least 500 to 800 ohms). If the igniter is testing good and glowing brightly then the gas control valve would be the suspected problem. And remeber to be very careful when doing these testing procedures so you do not hurt yourself.

I don't know how to clean the oven

Hello OTCHENASH...

Make & Model would be really really really helpful here!!!

if It's a NEW STYLE self cleaning oven... read the new manual.
or
if It's a OLD STYLE self cleaning oven... read the old manual.

It makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE...

Any advice here could fly right in the face of what you
owners manual dictates

You TYPICALLY remove the shelves.. and prep the interior with a warm sponge... to pick of loose particles.

Sets the controls for clean... return WELL after cool down.
Make sure the interior surface is cool to the touch... and
ONLY THEN :
Clean up the ash with a damp sponge!

Clean and return the shelves... and you are good for your next mess.

If it is not SELF CLEANING... get out the HAZ-MAT suits..

Again... remove shelves food, etc.
Open windows... Read the CAUTIONS on the label...
Follow those directions VERY CLOSELY... Else...

Get dressed and go out and by a new oven.

Happy hunting!

There are several products that you can use, you can get spray on cleaners, or ones that you paint the interior with, after letting stand for a while, you rinse and wash the interior with cold water.

Oven will not heat after self cleaning

We used the self cleaning feature on our RBS305 Built In Electric oven and afterwards it would not heat. replaced the Fuse-Thermal part Nr 9759243 (which is the new part number. (Shown as Nr 37 on the Parts list for the oven parts). Cut all Power to the oven off and it was very easy to pull oven out with help of my wife. Removed back, bought a new part for 49.55 plus tax. Put in new part, replaced back and oven works like new. I am a 73 year old senior so when I say it is fairly easy to replace you know it is. Hope this helps someone
