you can use the unit as an external drive, you will need to connect the it to your computer via usb then power it up, after 30 seconds or so it should show up on "My Computer" as an extra drive.
if it doesn't show then the internal battery could be flat, though it will charge via the usb if the power is off (red light on when charging) or use the supplied power adapter.
yeah, man, i did the same. cracked the glass, without damage to the screen, and then just made one myself, cutting it out from a cd-box and then glued it on :)

The PVR h140 works on mpeg1 or mpeg4 format.
If you need to convert avi files for example you will need a third party conversion programme such as Nero7 or similair free programmes.
