Never work. I took it out of the box installed batteries and after three minutes I hear a loud pop and smelt smoke.

My technician opened it and one of the curcuit boards is burnt.

  • uncleabe Jan 28, 2008

Thank you all. My technician figured out the values of the burnt components and fixed it.

Electroman. The flash is new. Vivitar relaunched this flash around March, 2007.

I have the same exact problem. Just not sure what component is fried in my unit and mine is the new 285HV which i just got a week ago. Can you provide the component descriptions or anything that will assist in having my own electronics handy man troubleshoot my flash? Thanks in advance! -harry

Can you provide the component part numbers/names or a picture of what was fixed? My unit is fried as well and it is a new 285HV i recently got. I want to see if one of my friends is able to fix mine for me as well instead of shipping it back.

I had the same problem on a new 285HV flash. I pulled it apart and found a blown resistor and track in the head of the flash.
The flash was fairly easy to pull apart, there is a clip hiding behind the blue disk, the rest is just screws.
There are 3 circuit boards, two in the base and one in the head.
The blown resister is in the head and is the large resister next to the violet wire. From the edge of the board there is R22 brown-black-brown, two diodes, another resistor yellow-violet-brown and then the one that died.
I have the service manual for the flash and it is titled 285/285HV but the circuit board in the service manual and in the flash are different.
After much studying of the circuit diagram I believe the value of the resister is 12K 2watt (90% sure, if not it is 10K 2watt).
I replaced the resistor with the 12K and was able to use the extra length of the leg of the resistor to bypass the blown track, used some heat shrink to insulate the leg from shorting out with the board.
I have tested the flash and it is working but I have not used it extensively.

Disclaimer: this board is right next to the capacitor, you don't want to touch it if it has a charge. Use a multimeter to check.

I bought the resistor from here: www.digikey.com Part No. P12KW-2BK-ND $0.206 (min order 5 still only a $1.03)

Good luck and remember I am not an electronics tech and your problem may be different to mine.

Actually that resistor was a 22k 2w but you should have no issues with that one I hope.. ;) that resistor gets fu*ked up if you bridge some high voltage on the PC sync connectore for some resaon, so you'll need to open up the whole vivitar 285HV until you reach the head circuit and desolder and solder a new resistor to fix it.

actually that resistor was a 22k, 2w not a 12k.. but ok.. ;) this little fu*cker gets easily blow in case of some sync bridging with some bad voltage.. need to open up the whole thing until the head and exchange the blown 22k with a new one..

Pull it straight out from the body. See the instructions on page 9 of the manual.

Why does it take more than 20 seconds to change up in order to fire the flash strobe on the vivitar 285hv

My first impression is that you are using the flash at its maximum capacity and completely draining the charge each time. I'd also say that you are only going to get about a dozen flash burst before the batteries are exhausted. I use several Vivitar 283's 285's and a couple 285HV's in a portable studio set up I have and the 285 HV's have got to be tuned down about 1/3 before I can get them to match the other flash outputs. If I need all out brute power then the 285HV's are used on full inside a softbox. I generally work with a 16 batteries between the two 285HV, also they need good fresh batteries off the charger. On a photo shoot I'll get maybe 15 shots before the power is down enough that I change then, I'd say powering back up it'll take about 15 to 20 seconds before they come out.

My one year old vivitar 285hv flash fires intermiiently (every 3 or so flashes) when the flash is connected by pc cord??

PC cord might get minor short circuit and got faulty.
You can confirm this by removing it.

No power know

if you're talking about the plug in knob on the front of the unit... without the knob, the unit will only deliver full power and not try to control the amount of light based on the color coding. there is no way around this. you can, order a new plug in module either from vivitar, on line stores like B&H or probably find one on e-bay.

Can I use my Vivitar 385 with my Pentax K200?

Yes, you can use the flash if your camera has a PC connector.

Or, check the trigger voltage: under 7VDC = OK on hotshoe.

Will a Vivitar 285HV fry my Canon EOS 40D? I'd like to experiment with a Vivitar 285HV as an on-camera hot shoe flash. However, I'm reluctant to proceed because of conflicting reports about voltage...

Personally, I would not try it. While the Canon has a protection system built into the camera, the trigger voltage on the Vivitar is pretty high. I have had good results using a 283 on a slave shoe, you will have to stop down more with the extra light
