Feed dog & auto threader problems.

Depends on your machine (which we do not know).

Adjusting the feed dogs is something you should not attempt to do. Instead, if your machine has the capability, you would adjust the presser foot pressure. Instructions should be included in your owner's manual. Loosening the pressure will allow the machine to handle thicker fabric.

Make sure the feed dogs are not in the dropped position (for darning).

If it is very light-weight fabric, most machines will have a presser foot pressure adjustment that will increase the presser foot's pressure on the feed dogs, thus pulling the fabric through better.

Make sure the feed dogs are clean--no debris stuck between the teeth, under the feed dogs, or around the bobbin case. If it is an older machine that has been used a lot, the feed dogs could be worn down and need replacement or adjustment. (Do not run the machine with the presser foot directly on the feed dogs. This will cause excessive wear to the feed dogs and the presser foot.)

Check that the feed dogs are in the "up" position for sewing (not dropped for darning). Also, verify that the stitch length is set to around #2 or 2.5. This will move the fabric well enough that it will actually advance with the feed dogs. If the stitch length is too short, the fabric will not advance sufficiently and will cause the needle to stitch in place.

If this does not cure the problem, you should take it for service.

under the foot around the needle, there should be two rows of what look like teeth, these pull the material through and there will be an adjustment mechanism on the machine. Try leaving the foot up while you run the machine, you should see the teeth going up and down; if they are it is most likely just a case of setting up the amount of pull. I think it is adjusted with the wheel that sets the length of stitch.

***Your feed dog under the pressure foot seems to be pulling on one side a little harder which indicates wear. It is likely to solve the problem by replacing the feed dog.
***Before you do this try to lower the pressure on the pressure foot. If the material you are sewing is thick it will have an effect on the pull of the feed dogs. The material you are sewing that you sent appears to be jeans material. It looks like it is thick and somewhat slippery.

depending on the brand of sewing machine you have, make sure it's not in the darn mode,, make sure the presser foot is against the fabric so the feed dogs can pull it thru,,if the presser foot is against the fabric correctly then the feed dogs may need to be check to see if they need a adjustment or replacing

Well there's a number of reasons why it may not be advancing the material. First, ensure that the teeth are completely cleaned-out - get an old toothbrush, or similar with firm filaments and, with the stitch-plate removed and the bobbin door open, give the teeth a really firm clean across the teeth to remove anything in between ... this is especially important if you've been sewing with metallised fabric or thread. If the teeth are nice and clean, check if they are still pyramidal with a reasonably 'sharp' point facing backwards - if the machine is very old and very well used, the teeth might be rather rounded and it may be time that you have a new feed dog fitted ... some of the old machines are difficult to obtain spares, but they're mostly still out there. Most commonly, check how far the teeth of the feed dogs protrude above the stitch plate ... this is a bit difficult to do and should really be done with a proper gauge, but generally they should protrude 1mm above the stitch plate - less than that and you wont get the material to move properly, especially if its fine material. Lastly, it could be the foot pressure that's the problem ... if there's inadequate foot pressure, the material will not be pushed adequately onto the dogs. Again, unfortunately, you really need a proper gauge to set the foot pressure, but if the dogs are clean, in reasonable condition and have 1mm of clearance above the stitch plate, you can try increasing the foot pressure a bit. This is done by opening the top cover and you will see a large-ish flat-blade screw in a threaded tube just behind where the needle bar goes up and down and to the left of the takeup arm. If the screw is rather near the top of the threaded tube, you can try screwing it down (clockwise) maybe 2-3 turns to see if it makes a difference ... of not, dont be tempted to just keep screwing up the pressure ... there's something else wrong. Oh .... and by the way .... before you've done any of the above, I assume you've checked that the feed-dogs are not dropped ! You can drop the feed-dogs to do embroidery etc on the 830 - there's a small round knob below the stitch length control - make sure its turned to the position that shows a tooth pattern and not the cross-hathced pattern and make sure the feed dogs do actually come above the stitch plate when turning the handwheel - if they dont, or moving the feed-dog drop control doesn't make any difference, then the link mechanism is almost certainly jammed (really, really common on old machines that haven't been regularly maintained!). To free that off, you need to remove the free-arm cover and look to the front right side of the mechanics - you'll see a linkage that should turn when you rotate the feed-dog drop control - if this doesn't separate or is permanently separated, whatever you do with the control, you need to give it a drop or two of Bernina sewing oil and gently help it move - once free, that should solve the problem. I cant think of any other reasons !!

I've been sewing since I was six (with mom's help), but all sewing machines are basically the same. The feed dog, which is what advances the fabric is most likely not moving. If you look at the area just under the presser foot & needle you'll see little "teeth". This is the feed dog. Take the thread out of the needle and run the machine without any fabric. Watch those teeth. They should rise & lower into the base. If they don't move when the foot pedal is pressed, then that is your problem and you'll need to take it to a repair shop. Good luck.

Remove the needle plate and clean the lint from between the teeth of feeddogs, also around and inside bobbin case.

The switch for the feeddogs is to raise (normal sewing) or lower (free motion) and if there is no difference, the accumulated lint will have made a felt pad between the teeth forcing the feeddogs to stay down and present with the problem you describe.


When things go a little "weird", the common instinct is OIL EVERYTHING............DON'T DO IT !!! ....this is rarely the solution on its own account, and can make the servicing a great deal longer as the excess must be removed........little oil regularly, not a bucketful every 5 years is a better approach.
