Hi--my 395 type 2 with variable speed switch wont work unless one taps on the outer case, then it runs and stops--loose connection in variable switch? How to proceed? thnx mike

I would think that just the brushes, they should slide freely in the slot. check also the condition of the armature for arcing or raised commutator bars.
Sounds like a switch or brushes. You can go to Dremel.com and they have a toll free number for their tech services and you can also download a breakdown for this tool.
I would recommend going to Dremel.com and asking their tech section about this. I have one also and mine works fine other than a small amount of heat at the spindle area.
The part number you need is 2610945681 variable speed switch. I checked a couple site with no luck but I suggest you call Dremel at 1-800-437-3635 and order direct. Good luck

the variable switch had 5 connection points on it, i bridged the connection on the 2 outer points with insulated wire,pretty much to see what would happen, this worked, as this will be a router fitted to a table i will at some point remove the wire and attach a 5way rotary switch, used for guitar electrics and mount it into a electrical switch casing,
