Finally got semi-high speed for my parents!!! BUT, I can't get one of my PCs to stay connected using the Belkin n1 USB adapter. All of the laptops work great. I have the router hardwired to a Mac and it works fine too.
So far -
I've updated the firmware on my Belkin N1 Router.
I've updated the drivers on the PC that is using the Belkin N1 wireless USB adapter. It connects for about 5 minutes and then it's gone.
I've reset the router about 10 times.
I've tried using only one USB port.
Read every single forum out there to no avail.
Dell Inspiron running Vista to use this adapter.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm heading back to school and wanted to get my parents set up before I left!
I just hit reset adapter (under diagnose and repair) instead of automatically receive IP) and I want to let you know that I am typing from that machine right now! It's been 10 minutes and I'm holding my breath.
Just in case, the numbers are F5D8051 for the adapter and F5D8231 for the router.
I'm still connected....oh my gosh!!!
Change channels to 1-6-or 11. Make sure you change all of them.
It may work better for you.
Try these first:
check is to make sure you are NOT using "IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network."
You can find at setting under "Wireless Network Connection Properties" and then under "Authentication" tab of your network properties.
This particular authentication method is periodically logging you off the network and re-authenticating.
Check the adapter in device manager to make sure that windows is not shutting the adapter down to save power.
Cordless phones and wireless ethernet cards use overlapping frequencies. As a test, you can unplug the AC cords from all the cordless phones in the area and see if it helps.
Are you using the VISTA adapter driver on the disconnecting computer?
Are your power saving settings to blame...?
Do you have your computer going to sleep during that 5 - 10 minutes of inactivity
Does the new laptop have a wireless adapter built-in?
If it does:
The Adapter does not perform or connection is unstable
when computer has a second built-in wireless network
card (such as a mini PCI or Intel® Centrino™).
This condition occurs if your computer has a built-in wireless
card while your Belkin N1 Wireless USB Adapter is also active.
This happens because Windows must now handle two active
wireless connections.
You must disable the built-in wireless card from your computer
under “Network Adapters” in the Device Manager.
AmandaG, Try disabling the ethernet adapter . I will keep trying!!!
PS, what kind of cookies???LOL
Go to device manager, click on network adapters , right click on your ethernet adapter, and disable.
Remember you will not be able to use the wired adapter until you enable it.
Make sure that the password is exactly the same as the other ones.
It could be a VISTA issue.
Check these out

more:
1.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2.
Click Network and Internet, click Network and Sharing Center, and then click Manage network connections.
3.
Right-click the network that you want to disable 802.1X authentication for, and then click Properties.
4.
Click the Security tab, and then, in the Security Type list, click No authentication (Open). Click OK.
Yes, disable or better yet take out the dialup connection and make sure it doesnt dial out.
Do I need to install the router software on the desktop although I am only using the adapter?
No, the router is set up because the other wireless works.
The problem is with the vista computer.. There might be a firewall denying access somewhere. Didnt it come with norton, mcafee or some antivirus solution?
Also, do not use the connection software fron Dlink. use the wireless connection from Microsoft.
Another thought, Is the router hooked up the new PC?
Does the adapter get hot before it goes out?
Have you called dlink tech support? They may have a solution that we didn't cover.
is the router set to automatic on the bands, like B,G,N?
What I would right now is . Uninstall the whole adapter (hardware and software)and start over....from the beginning...following the manual very carefully. I
Unchecked power save option for USB in device manager.
But did you uncheck the power save option on the adapter???
The power save is in the device manager
If you see a red X over the icon, double click to open the network connection. What is the status? If it is disabled, double click to enable.
The yellow triangle normally means that the Network Card is detecting a connection (for example a wire plugged in or sees and connects to a wireless router) but it cannot connect to the network because it does not have the proper information to do so. This can be the IP address, or the DNS information or in the case of a wireless connection, it might be missing the security key (if active), etc...
First, I would disconnect the router, wait 10 seconds and then reconnect it in order to reset it. It will take a couple minutes to come back online. Then right click on the network connection and select "repair". This will renew the IP and DNS information. Do this after the router has rebooted and back online.
Verify in the router's menu that DHCP is turned on. This is the service/function that gives out the IP address to the computer along with the DNS information and gateway (the router's own IP address).
Make sure your network card is set to receive automatic IP address and DNS information as well.
Control Panel\Network and Sharing Center, manage network connections. Double click
Also go to control panel, power options, change to high performance.
right click on the little monitors in the system tray and diagnose and repair
can you give me the model numbers of your adapter anf router?
http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Product...
I do not see these on this certified by Microsoft to work with VISTA list...>>>
Is it still working?
Yes, you are right it is..
Amanda, I would try a pci wireless adapter now. You have tried everything possible to get this usb adapter to work. They should take it back. It may be an issue with the USB.
Amanda, Thank you for the Update. I am so happy you are happy. You can check my profile for my web address. Oatmeal or chocolate chip is my favorite, or even a double chocolate cake... LOL LOL

Usually answered in minutes!
I've done that too. The USB adapter works fine on an old laptop that I have positioned near the PC I'm trying to connect.
Would a PCI card be better???
Thank you for you help!
Thank you for the speedy response!
I tried your solutions...
Unchecked power save option for USB in device manager.
Checked to make sure 802.1 authentication is NOT being used.
Updated driver for Vista in Belkin site.
No cordless phones in the house.
Working with USB and cradle on old laptop running XP just fine but not with new desktop running Vista. Still disconnecting every 2 to three minutes.
Would a PCI card run into same problems? Thank you again!
Thank you for the detailed help list! Tried all of your suggestions.
No cordless phones.
Unchecked save power option in device manager. And is NOT authenticating using 802.1.
Updated driver for Vista from Belkin site.
Working with usb and cradle on laptop but will disconnect EVERY time with cradle on desktop after 2 or three minutes.
Any other suggestions? Could it be new Dell? Would PCI card work any differently?
Thank you again!!!
Amanda
Nothing is going to sleep (including me, ha!).
I have the Mac that is hardwired to the router set to NOT sleep and the disconnecting PC to NOT sleep.
It is more like every 2 minutes so I know it has to be some setting that keeps cycling. I do NOT have the powersave option on the USBs.
I REALLY appreciate your help! My parents want to box the whole thing up and take it back but I keep making them wait, refreshing my email to see if you have responded!
It's a desktop and does NOT have a wireless card installed. It is only finding the Belkin USB adapter when searching for networks.
We bought it (Dell 531S) from BestBuy with no option to upgrade to a an internal wireless card.
My mom wants to send you cookies for your help!
How do I do that? Disable the ethernet adapter?
Any kind you'd like!!
I think you're on to something! (I've been playing with other settings and talking to Dell support who were utterly useless.)
When I disable the ethernet adapter, I can't connect to the internet but it always shows that I am connected. In other words, the icon in the bottom tray shows the little world the whole time whereas before it would be there, then disappear, and then have the yellow triangle with the exclamation point in it.
So I have disabled the ethernet adapter and have left the wireless adapter enabled. Where to next?
Cookies or cake??
Wrong! I was wrong! It connected and then dropped, just like before.
Could this be some crazy Vista issue?
I don't have any security settings on any of it yet (we live way out in the country so I didn't make that a priority yet).
We initially installed AOL dial-up. I don't think it's trying to dial anywhere, but maybe it is? Should I disable the dial -up connection? When I look at the settings, it doesn't even show anything populated in the username or password for AOL so I don't imagine it's trying to do anything there. And besides, the old XP laptop had dial-up too and it's working fine.
I tried that and it was already set to No authentication.
Now tell me why on the activity page it's showing sending and receiving is still moving along and that I have been connected for 51 minutes but when I double click the network it shows me those red X's through the line from the router to the internet? I'm a HUGE pest, huh?!
Tried that too.
Couple of other observations -
When I have my working laptops on and running, the router's "wireless" led is on. When no laptops are on, and just the disconnecting desktop is running and connected, I saw that one time the light on the router for wireless went off. Weird, huh? Maybe the router is losing sight that a wireless connection from the desktop is seeking its cooperation? Do I need to install the router software on the desktop although I am only using the adapter (for which I have installed the software).
Also, just to note, I installed the firmware updates for the router on the working desktop that is hardwired.
One other note, the light on the router does NOT go off when I have laptops connected, but I still am able to connect with the persnickety desktop but then I always lose the connection (and the light on the router is still on).
You're the best! Thanks for trying to help with this. I need to pay you!
The router is hooked up to an older G4 PowerMac. The new Dell desktop is not hardwired to the router (nor has it ever been, maybe I should test that?). It has the Norton startup "please install", when the computer starts up but I cancel that each time.
I would think if there was a firewall it wouldn't let me connect at all. But now that you mention it, I was able to connect for about 10 minutes one time and it didn't drop me (just searching through wikipedia articles).
And I have set up the new connection through Microsoft, I think. I go into the network and sharing and connect to the Belkin stuff there.
You know, the back of the little thing does get a little hot. Not terribly hot. But again, it was working fine, both in cradle and directly plugged in, and never lost the connection with the Sony Vaio running XP (and I like your motto, my parents are convinced I need to revert to XP).
I called Belkin and they said they thought I had a faulty usb adapter but again, works fine with one computer.
I have a Belkin N1 router and a Belkin N1 usb adapter. I don't know how to check the router settings.
Speaking of, would it make any sense to return the whole thing and go for a G or regular N? We have satellite broadband through Dish if that makes a difference.
That's a good idea. I've uninstalled and reinstalled so many times but I need to start totally fresh and try again and read the directions from start to finish. Everything else just worked so perfectly the first time on the other computers, real plug and play, that I thought this would too.
I don't see any power save button on the adapter or the cradle. Where should I be looking?
OHHH...I just unchecked for USB devices, did not specifically right click the belkin and then power save. It seems to lasting a little longer and I don't get the yellow triangle on the network icon in the tray.
However, and this might be a whole other issue, is that I'm still having to wait and refresh when the thing starts slowing down and then it can't connect. I've waited a few minutes and it can connect some of the time. I also disconnected and reconnected a a few times. But at least it's not dropping the signal from the router any longer. Yippee!
As a side, it never dropped the internet signal while on the laptop and I'm watching my modem's LEDs and all is good too.
Take that back. When I went back to that computer, it had dropped the signal from the router (used to be just red X from router to internet and now it's yellow triangle from router to computer and red X from router to wireless computer).
I think I need to make you birthday cakes for a year!
That has GOT to the issue. Where do I change the adapter settings? I tried to automatically receive IP address (repair) and then it gives me the error saying that it can't find router or modem (which is not true). It also gives me the option of automatically renew IP address again and reset.
Router was set with DHCP on.
And I meant to say birthday cakes for years, plural!
Everything was already set to receive automatic IP and DNS. And power was saved for Maximum performance.
Is this what they call "my wit's end"?
I just hit reset adapter (under diagnose and repair) instead of automatically receive IP) and I want to let you know that I am typing from that machine right now! It's been 10 minutes and I'm holding my breath.
The numbers are F5D8051 for the adapter and F5D8231 for the router.
Just dropped me again....ahhhhh! I just hit reset again to send this.
(Meant to add comment, not a solution, obviously!)

I was wrong about the router...I meant F5D 8231-4 and the adapter is F5D8050 (version 3000).
Wouldn't that be the case! I checked with Belkin before we bought everything and it says it works with Windows Vista (and their tech support on the phone said the same thing) but of course they would say that.
I was thinking about bagging the Belkin and going with Linxsys to hardwire to the make and get the adapter for the "disconnecting computer." That's on the list for tomorrow. Thank you soooo much and I'll let you know what I find out.
Good night!
Nope. Keeps cutting off (and getting the yellow triangle). When I try to repair and allow ISP, it gets halfway through the progress bar and stops. Then it gives me those options about resetting, etc. and then it says Microsoft cannot fix the problem, contact my ISP provider. Arhghh!!
And I do see the 8051 v. 3000 on the certified list as much as I would like to blame it on them and not me! Isn't it the N/N1 - USB- Vista 8051 under the first belkin N usb product, and is certified?
OH MY GOODNESS, it's working! I just returned the sucker and bought a Linksys N USB adapter and it's working like a charm. It had to be either a faulty adapter to begin with or it was the Vista issue (which is where I'm leaning because it worked well on others running XP).
I cannot tell you how invaluable your information has been. I know so much more about this whole wireless networking thing. I'm in my last semester of grad school (not for technology, but...), I was starting to feel really dumb. The signal is even better than it was and it's not dropping. Yippppeeeee!! Thank you again for everything! Where can I send your cakes?!!!
My F5D8051 keeps dropping out.
I have the latest drivers and tried channel changes and made sure there is no interference. It drops my router and I can still see others. When I disconnect the USB adapter and reconnect it, it see's my router and connects as normal, until it drops it again.....
I have had the same problem and was planning on switching to a linksys adapter before I read this. Now I am definately changing. Belkin support was useless for me as well.
