I have a HP DAT72 Tape Back Up Drive with SCCI Card. An internal 500 gig hard drive and a 1 Tara-byte hard drive. The tape drive backs up files with HP Protector Express. It will not recognize itself in XP Professional that there is a tape back up drive let alone recognize it when I try to use XP's backup program. Can you help! Sincerely Robin A. Bateman

Because the DAT72 can copy 72GB with 2:1 compressed, and it's native capability is 36GB in the most. So you can try to copy less than 30GB data to it or try to enable the drive's compress mode.
Perform the cleaning action using a new cleaning tape. It is not recommended to clean the tape over and over again, if the cleaning light is still ON. Contact the vendor and get it sorted out.

Tape drives are an antiquated backup solution. For less than $100 you can buy a 1 Terabyte USB 2 hard drive with space to back up even the most data-intensive systems.
Make sure there are no pending jobs on the drive, if the drive is expecting a tape and gets a cleaning tape it will spit it out. Also, has the cleaning tape been used a lot? They have a limited life cycle and if they have exceeded their max uses they may not work.
Tape drives do need cleaning frequently and the 'auto clean' facility may not be enough.
The problem is the continuous shedding of oxide needs cleaning right off and the auto system may not be enough.
What you need is a back-up Drive.
and the out of service drive needs physically stripping down to clean all off using a soft brush and where appropriate coproponal alcohol
