the tv comes on normally and stays on for a while. it then goes into standby mode for a about 30-45 seconds, then comes back on. it keeps repeating this

Hello make sure the lamp and the cover is fitted securely, when you've done this the tv should be ok

Its symptom of weak lamp in TV, please replace lamp.
Lamp replacement procedure is easy and mentioned in instruction manual, if you need copy of manual, click Sony Support.
Please buy Sony original lamp for TV safety and avoid aftermarket/ cheap lamp.
You can buy replacement lamp from Sony Accessories Store under following part number..

3 time blink shows that Lamp Cover is not fixed properly. Please check Lamp Cover and make sure its fixed securely.

no you should only replace a bulb with the one made for that brande t.v. you should put in a sony xl-2400 in your sony t.v. and yes you should get both housing and bulb in 1 i bought mine off ebay for about 116.00$ both lamp and housing very easy to replace good luck also if you have a sony kdf-42we655 or 50we655the lamp part # is xl-21oou or xl-2100
