My hp lazer jet 1600 is making big black horozonal

That must be the Lazer assembly has a problem. If you can find a replacement your problem will go. Probably something is blocking it completely.

Not sure if the 1600 has the same printer cartridge, but I have a 4620, and had the same thing occur with the black ink. After a few hours on the phone with HP and them sending me a replacement printer that also wouldn't print, I found that there is a "vent" on the printer cartridges that if clogged, will cause that color not to print. The vent is on the top of the cartridge, facing up when installed into the printer. The vent looks like a "T". Unfortunately, the packaging that HP uses on these cartridges sometimes causes glue to clogged the vent. Take a sharp nail or straight pin, and clean out the vent. Hope this is successful for you.

You need to download the printer drivers from the Compaq/HP WEB support/download page. Make sure you select your model laptop and the XP or Vista Windows version of the drivers you require and install them. Click on this link to download the drivers: -

How old is it?
Page getting dark sounds like the drum getting old.

Every print job, copy, and fax have the solid black line across the pages. I have changed the drum and the cartridge and even tried cleaning mode. Please help!!! I have a HP Laser Jet 2840 All in One

HP 1600 is quite a decent little printer, so you shouldn't be dissapointed - if it's working properly, which clearly it's not in this case.

It seems that you have 2 problems here.

Firstly it shouldn't click loudly, so you need to be talking to whoever you bought the printer from.

The smudging - is probably a dirty fuser.
There are laser printer cleaning sheets, that will work quite well, but ideally it needs a little bit of dismantling to get at the fuser to clean the two fuser rollers.

I've seen lots of these with dirty fusers, and a clean with IPA does the trick.

Seriously, buy a new printer. Companies sell toner, not printers! The printer is basically a "freebie" and is a marketing vehicle to sell toner. I tossed my C510 into the dumpster. It had four new toner cartridges. System diagnostics said that everything was at 95% or better. The printer had about 1600 prints on it. The first set of toner cartridges (full at purchase!) printed great. Then, I got dotted lines on clean prints. Or, I would get washed out, yellow tinted print and often, there was no black print. I called a printer repair shop and they laughed and told me to chuck the printer - they were suprised it lasted through the first set of cartridges. Lexmark literally "ignored me to death."

I will NEVER buy another Lexmark. The Brother and HP color lazers are probably the best bet. I have two HP B&W's that are paper pumps - an old 4V and a 6MP. The sad part is that I paid a bit more for the Lexmark than the competing HP. You live and then you learn!

It should not, when you say pink you mean Magenta right?
sounds like it needs some cleaning, pull out everything you can pull out from the printer, and carefully clean any tone you see inside with a dry cloth, also clean the cartridges themselves.

print a few pages for any remaining toner to get phased/cleaned out on the print outs and see what happens
