Hi, I am Russ. You don't say whether it is electric or gas? I am going to consider it electric, if it isn't then clarify.
If you are getting no hot water it can be and most usually is a very easy fix. At least try before calling a repairman. On the front of the water heater there are one or two (usually two) bulged out somewhat covers. This is where your upper and lower heating elements are. First of all, check the breaker or fuse to see if it is tripped or blown, if it is your heating element is most likely bad. You can by them at Home Depot. Try to locate the Breaker or fuse and turn it off, Next, open the top cover on front of heater and you will see a device in their that is the thermostat. it has a temperature dial on it and also a RESET button, most of the time the reset button has to be reset by simply pushing in on it, you will feel it set if it was tripped. The reason I say to turn off the power is because the thermostat has the live wires on it and if you touch one you will know it, (I do them w/o turning off power) because I have done them alive before and got shocked, but I know how to do it safely, so I don't. I HIGHLY recommend you turn it off. Sometimes the reset buttons are red. They pop out sometimes for no apparent reason, and just resetting them works fine, if it pops more than once, it is either the element, or the temperature dial is set too high, back it down slightly. If you have a usually gray box on next to your WH and the power cable comes from it to the WH, check to make sure it is on, it is an energy saving type device that turns the WH off at times, it should be ON, you can tell just by looking at it. There are other things that could be wrong but I gave you the ones that are the most common, there are times when a 240volt WH loses power on one wire and that can do it, in that case you need a licensed electrician or appliance repairman (or woman!) Good luck, and also please vote for me if you will, I am trying to go up to GURU! Thanks
