Most likely, you can not, ribbon cable connecting LCD assembly to main board is broken and it comes as hinge assembly. So, you will have to buy at list the part from sony.

I had the same problem with my cam and I managed to fix it by myself. I opened my cam and noticed that in the ribbon cable was a little somekind of dirt maybe from the components. So I wiped the "dirt" away from the ribbon cable gently with piece of paper and suddenly my cam was working just fine. Maybe you should try to gently wipe the ribbon cables too.

I have a Sony DCR HC 17E video camera and I used it only for an hour in different occasions and when I tried to use it again the screen went off but when I touch the screen it still works for playback, rewind and forward but with a dark black screen. I attached it to another TV and it works perfectly. I checked on the internet and one of the common faults seems to be the ribbon cable for the touch screen although I opened it for about 20 times or so. Do you think it is the one? When I spoke with the technician he told me that there is a piece of plastic to be changed too. Is it included with the ribbon cable? Do you now were I can purchase one?
