Which function key turns on wireless
On some compaq laptops the wireless switch is on the side of the laptop! look for a button! also some laptops have a wireless symbol on one of the f keys if you find the symbol on the f keys then you click on the fn and the f key with the wireless symbol at the same time!! that should work!
The button to the right of the Power On button, is the Wireless button.

Try to check the bios settings if WIFI is enabled. because if you turned on the switch but if it's disabled in the BIOS, it'll still won't work. :)

The wireless activation toggle is hold down the Fn key and hit F1.

Assuming this is the DV7 series laptop you picked when you posted there is a small wireless key above the keyboard(not embedded in the F keys) that shout be orange with the wireless picture displaying if it has been turned of.
press the key and wait about ten seconds and it should be fine.
If the key doen't turn blue then you may have a "real" problem, if it does you should be fine.

Maybe you don't have your wireless turned on. Look on
both sides and in front for the Wireless Switch and turn it on.
Also once the wireless switch is turned on there are keystrokes that can toggle
the wireless on or off. Normally you would Press and Hold the FN function
key located at the lower left of the keyboard, then hit the correct F1 thru F12
key that toggles the wireless. The correct F1 thru F12 key to hit will
have the wireless signal icon )))) on it. Or it might have the icon of a tower
with the wireless signal icon )))). Normally the screen will display
Wireless On or Wireless Off when you toggle the wireless.
Some laptops might have a wireless button instead of a wireless switch located above the keyboard or on the front or sides.
