Remove rear panel of washer, and remove drive belt.
Spin the drum by hand, and if it feels rough, or is noisy, then the main drum bearings have failed, quite a big job to do.

Sounds loike the main drum bearings have failed.
Spin the drum by hand from the front, and if it feels rough, or is rumbling or grating, then the main bearigs have failed.
Quite an expensive repair, unless it is covered by the Hotpoint 5 year parts guarantee, check with Hotpoint.
It is the main drum bearings that is causing the noise.
There is no provision made for lubrication.
It can be done as a DIY fix, but it is a very involved repair, as it means having to remove the whole inner workings of the washer,
Not a task I would recommend unless you know what you are doing, and feel competent to tackle it.

sounds like the dryer heater element has worked loose perhaps and shorted out against the metal dryer box which sits on top of the drum.
best to get an engineer out i'd say.
comon fault on hotpoints is drum bearings put ya hand in the drum and give it a quick flick if it soundslike it rumbles buy a new washer.since merloni bought hotpoint you prob have to buy a whole drum not just bearings
It could be that the drum is coming loose and a bolt requires tightening. I would suggest that you cease use until you get this fixed. Yell.com will provide you with choice of qualified engineers who can assess and repair.
no the steam from the dryer part comes out of outlet tube the same tube were the water comes out hotpoint washer/dryers use a condensing chamber which allows the steam to cool down a pass through it as water does and through the outlet pipe
