We have a main desktop hard wired to the linksys, and a laptop using the wireless part of it. They both work fine! BUT we need to hook an older desktop to it via ethernet, and it is not recognizing any sort of available Internet. What should I do please?

First connect that desktop to linksys with ethernet cable.
then set ip property to network adapter .
Set ip address ,subnet mask and gateway ip to ip property.
Set ip address as the ip of network like if router ip is 192.168.1.1 so set ip like 192.168.1.15
set subnet mask as same as your other computer.
Set default gatway ip as your router ip.
Then you can connect internet.
Let me know if you need more assistance.

Thanks.

Hi Friend, It depends that whether your router is wireless or wired. If it is a wireless router then there is no need to connect the laptop with the cable, you can use the laptop wirelessly If it is a wired router and as you said that the Desktop is already connected to the router with the cable so in that case you have to get another ethernet cable and can connect it from the router to your laptop

Although cable to desktop connects to internet, my router from desktop to laptop via router won't connect.

Desk top to internet is OK.
How about Destop through Router connection to Internet OK?
Assuming you want to connect wireless from Lap top to Network, need to configure correctly for wireless in Router.
If you connect Lap top to router by wire and it didn't work that mean your router is bad.

Getting wireless computor and router back on line with desk top computor

1. Disconnect power from your modem and router
2. Connect an ethernet cord from your modem's ethernet port to your router's Internet or WAN port.
3. Connect another ethernet cord from a port on your router (labeled with a "1" above it).
4. Connect power to your modem and router.
5. I'm a little unsure about how you plan to connect your wireless computer to the router. The router you selected when you created this question is not wireless-capable.

If your router is wireless-capable, go to the wireless computer. Follow the instructions for your operating system below.

Windows XP

1. Right-click on the My Network Places icon on your desktop, and select Properties.
2. Right-click on Wireless Network Connection.
3. Right-click on View Available Wireless Networks.
4. Double-click on your network from the list that appears (it should be called "linksys" if you didn't change the name).

Windows Vista

1. Click on the network icon on the lower-right of your screen (it should look like two computers with one behind another. It might have a red "X" over it.)
2. Click "Connect to a network" (it also might be labeled "Connect or disconnect")
3. Double-click on your network from the list (it should be called "linksys" if you didn't change the name.

Mac OS X

1. Click on the AirPort menu in the upper right of your screen (it looks like "("s turned on their side).
2. Click on your network in the list that appears (it should be called "linksys" if you didn't change the name).

How to install a linksys router to my desk top for my wireless laptop

1. plug in the router
2. connect the router to your DSL or Cable Modem using the supplied ethernet cable
3. connect the router to your computers ehternet port with a second piece of ethernet cable

you can use catagory 5 ethernet cable , or catagory 6

Most linksys routers have 4 to 5 ethernet ports to connect computers to.

One of the ports will be marked as the one to connect to your DSL or Cable Modem

Usually when looking at the back of the router the WAN port will be located to the far left.

Setting up router having problems

Hi,

You don't need to have a WiFi adapter for the desktop. It can be connected using a LAN cable from the PC's Ethernet port to one of the routers Ethernet port. AS long as the desktop is set to "Auto obtain IP add" then it should work straight out.

If the LinkSys WRT54G did not came with a setup CD/Wizard, then you would need to reset it since I can only assume that it has been tried/used elsewhere before and the settings/configuration may not match your ISP and/or your network configuration. Reset involves pressing a small recessed button at the rear of the unit for about 10 seconds or more.

Once the reset was done and your router can connect to your ISP and therefore your desktop to the Internet, the laptop would also follow suit as long as the network settings is likewise set to Auto obtain.....

To verify if you can connect to the router, on your desktop, open a browser and log on to your router using 192.168.1.1,

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Wireless - G router

If the Linksys is not yet configured use the desktop to put the CD in and follow instructions to add the Linksys Router to your existing network setup.

Once inside there are a few more steps to getting a desktop PC to see & network with a laptop PC within a router/wireless environment. Once the Linksys is setup you may want to repost something to get the computers talking to each other.

Take care...
