JVC th-m505. DVD tray stuck. fully functioning otherwise.

I have a JVC th-m505. the DVD tray has become stuck. it tries to eject, moves a little (maybe 1/4 inch) up, makes a clicking sound and then goes back to its original position.

Any ideas about this? I can give more info if you need it. I just don't know what all is relevant.
thanks

    Something is obstructing the tray movement. Turns out a boy shoved two DVDs into a tray, breaking a tray in the process.

SOURCE: JVC TH-M505 No Sound

It is possible that a fuse has blown in the sub-woofer box. This unit has the entire amplifier built right into the sub-woofer. It also has a number of fuses in it. I have found that over the years fixing these units that if a fuse is blown you will also have more serious problems in the amp circuit. That is usually why the fuse will blow. They sometimes even have a problem in the main head unit with a digital transistor that is a surface mounted transistor that will cause this problem also. This transistor is part of the turn on circuit that signals the sub-woofer to turn on when the head unit is turned on. None of these problems are an easy fix I am sorry to say.

If you have at least a little experience with electronics and the right tools, like a multimeter and soldering equipment, I may be able to help you figure out the problem. But be aware that these are not easy to fix, and you may spend lots of time trying to figure it out just to find out that you will still need to take it in to a service center and in many cases when somebody tries to fix these type of units and have no experience with them they often cause more problems than they have started with.

For starters you can at least check the fuses, but please be sure to unplug the entire unit from the wall outlet before doing anything, there is a big risk of electrical shock.

The bottom of the sub-woofer has 6 screws in it (If I remember right) and those 6 screws must come out, they are rather big and you must use a number 2 phillips head screwdriver. Then after that you must take out all the screws from around the edges of the black metal panel where the speakers plug in to. When those are all out you can pull the amplifier unit right out of the sub-woofer box. Be careful when you pull it out, you will need to unplug a set of wires to get it all the way out, maybe two sets of wires, I am going off of just my memory right now, but if you need more help I will look up the service manual to help you more.

You will find at least one fuse right near the board where the A/C plug goes to and then you will find a few more fuses on the board that is on the right side while looking at the amp block from the same position you pull it out from and this board is plugged into the bottom board and is vertical but the short side is up and down, the long side is going towards the back of the amp and it is running along the metal chassis on that right side.

I hope this helps you, if you need more help just post your questions here.

I am getting the locked display

Hi Blackhawk,
This sounds like you've accidentally set the "tray lock" feature.
You can set this to stop unwanted tray ejections:

My dvd player is locked

If you are unable to get the tray of the dvd player open either the player will have a hole in front for you to stick a (I use a straightened out paper clip) into and press in towards the dvd player. It will manually open the drive so you can retrieve your dvd or there will be enough of a lip on the tray door you can grab it and pull it open manually. Then I would try unplugging the player and waiting a few minutes and plugging it back in and you might get lucky and it may never happen again. Good luck . Hope it works.

JVC TH-M505 "No Disc" Readout

If for some reason you would opt for user performed action, then pls try:
1. reset, unplug from the mains for at least an hour and try again;
2. check if there is a slide switch of some sort at the rear of the unit;
3. check if there may be a pinhole somewhere along the bottom of the loading tray where a blunted point safety pin maybe inserted;
4. open the top cover and manually eject the tray;
5. check internally if there is a mechanical problem such as a slipping/cut belt, gears that do not mesh correctly;
6. if the unit has been in use for some time, it may simply need cleaning and re-application of lubricant in the mechanical assembly.

The slider mechanism, depending on the age of the unit and , consists of the small chrome rail, a drive motor, a small gear assembly, and (in some units) a small belt that drives the slider unit via the motor. This small belt causes all sorts of problems. If the belt is broken or slipping, it can cause skipping, dropouts, or simply no start up at all. Also, if the belt breaks in the middle of the disc, the drive mechanism gets hair or dirt wrapped up into the gears, or the pick-up assembly doesn’t return to the start position (called home), the unit will (99% of the time) refuse to release the disc, causing it to become stuck inside the unit. There’s a little micro or leaf type switch located at home position that sometimes gets dirty or breaks and, causing this problem also.

Hope this may help;

Regards,

There are two rails in the dvd player. I have found that cleaning the rails & applying new grease to them usually solves the problem. a spray with silcone will do. do not get any on the laser. best done by a pro & not many know of this little trick.
