Check the instructions which are freely available from www.miele.co.uk or the relevant site for your country. Browse to the current models and you should find the PDF for your model. For non-current models, instructions are under the link "Customer Support".

In general, the instructions are as follows:
If the water in your area is very soft and constantly lower than 0.7 mmol/l (4 °d) you do not need to add dishwasher salt. The water softener must, however, still be programmed to correspond to the water hardness level in your area. (The salt indicator light will still come on, but should be ignored).

Important: Before filling the salt reservoir with dishwasher salt for the first time, you must fill it with approx. 2 litres of water to enable the salt to dissolve. Once the dishwasher has been used, there is always sufficient water in the reservoir.

Inadvertently filling the salt reservoir with powder or liquid dishwasher detergent always leads to serious damage to the water softener. Make sure you have picked up the correct packet of dishwasher salt before filling the salt reservoir!

Only use special coarse grained dishwasher salt for reactivation. Do not use other salts such as cooking salt, agricultural grade or gritting salt. These may contain insoluble additives which can impair the functioning of the water softener.

To refill:
* Remove the lower basket and unscrew the salt reservoir cap.
* Fill the reservoir with approx. 2 litres of water (first use).
* Place the funnel provided over the salt reservoir and carefully fill with salt until the reservoir is full. The salt reservoir holds approx. 2 kg of salt depending on the brand used.

As the salt reservoir is filled, displaced water will overflow.
* Clean any excess salt from around the reservoir opening and then screw the cap on again firmly.
* Run the "Pre-wash" programme immediately to remove any traces of salt water from the cabinet.

For the Miele, the salt reservoir is usually under the bottom basket, the cap is usually grey in colour. [Only the latest models have the refill cap in the door itself].

You should be able to find dishwasher salt just about anywhere, I've even found it in Malaysia, sold at good ol' Tesco!! Brands of salt include Calgonit (Finish) & Somat.

Have a hotpoint aquarius dishwasher Won't work powers up Red light comes on with salt 2 nd red light come on showing X What is the X? Please

Here's what you can do to address this issue:
  1. Check the Salt Level: Ensure that the salt reservoir is filled with dishwasher salt. The dishwasher needs salt to soften the water and improve the cleaning performance. If the salt level is low or empty, refill the reservoir with dishwasher salt.
  2. Check the Salt Dispenser Cap: Make sure that the salt dispenser cap is securely closed. If it's not closed properly, it can cause the "X" symbol to appear on the display.
  3. Reset the Dishwasher: Try resetting the dishwasher by turning it off at the mains power supply for a few minutes, then turning it back on. This can sometimes clear error codes and restore normal operation.
  4. Check for Blockages: Ensure that the salt dispenser and its inlet are free from any blockages or obstructions that could prevent salt from dissolving properly.
  5. Consult the Manual: If the issue persists, refer to the dishwasher's user manual for troubleshooting steps specific to your model. The manual may provide additional information about error codes and how to resolve them.
If none of these steps resolve the issue and the "X" symbol continues to appear on the display, it may indicate a more significant problem with the dishwasher that requires professional diagnosis and repair. In such cases, contacting Hotpoint customer service or a qualified appliance technician for assistance is recommended.

I have a new Midea dishwasher. I had a professional to install it. The salt compartment always gives a light although it's full. Please advise, thank you.

Question edited for clarity, add some punctuation and make some sentences. 'install it', not 'apply it'.

No model stated so guesswork required. Perhaps the light tells you the salt is fine. Read the manual and if it is a 'fill with salt light', contact the seller or the maker because it is new and under warranty.

This says 'low salt'.

What is the meaning of the red arrow light on my Defy DDW236 Dishwasher? I filled with salt yesterday and had to refill again today which is also strange so that light is back on too

On other Defy dishwashers, the red arrow indicates End of Cycle. Thus your dishes should be clean and ready to be removed from the dishwasher. See page 14 the manual for the DDW170 here: https://www.newappliances.co.za/uploads/documents/DOWNLOAD%20MANUAL%20DDW170.pdf . On page 6, the manual states that the add salt indicator can glow for an extended period after you add salt. This is due to the time needed to dissolve the water softener salt in 1 liter of water. Do not add more salt than the reservoir can hold (2 Kg for the DDW170).

I hope this helps.

(Note: if the salt reservoir was dry, you need to add water before adding the water softener salt.)

What do these mean on a zanussi dishwasher model DE 6854

The top light is apparently to indicate that the salt (!) has run out.

The bottom light is apparently to indicate that rinse aid has run out.

For the record, that seems to be a Zanussi DE-6854 dishwasher, and I found the manual here: (link)

"Special salt can be added in one of two ways: 1) If you are using dishwasher detergent that already contains salt, the detergent including the salt is placed in the detergent compartment. - In this case the water softener must manually be set to 1 and electronically to 1 to ensure that the special salt is taken from the detergent container only. 2) If you are using dishwasher detergent and salt separately, the special salt is to be put into the salt container. - In this case the water softener must manually be set to 1 or 2 and electronically between 1 and 5 (depending on the water hardness in your area) to ensure that the special salt is taken from the salt container only. Only use salt specifically designed for use in dishwashers. All other types of salt not specifically designed for use in a dishwasher, especially table salt, will damage the water softener. Only fill with salt just before starting one of the washing programmes. This will prevent any grains of salt or salty water, which may have been spilt, remaining on the bottom of the machine for any period of time, which may cause corrosion." (Page 6)

"Only use branded rinse aid for dishwashers. Never fill the rinse aid dispenser with any other substances (e.g. dishwasher cleaning agent, liquid detergent). This would damage the appliance." (Page 7)

The manual also explains how to turn the Rinse Aid light off permanently if you do not wish to use rinse aid.

Good luck!

Our water is soft and does not require salt. how do we stop the red light

I think it might depend on the model # and it should be in your manual.

Example for a G858 SCVI plus instructions (without pictures) are;

Bypassing the salt indicator

If your water is soft (below 8 gr/gal) the
salt reservoir should not be filled with
salt. The indicator will remain lit and
should be disregarded or bypassed.

Remove the salt reservoir cap.

Looking into the salt reservoir, you will
see the top of the float chamber on the
right hand side, a.

Using a screwdriver, carefully pivot
the float chamber towards the center
of the reservoir.

Using needle nose pliers, pull the
cap, b, off of the float chamber, and
remove the float, c.

Replace the float chamber cap, push
the chamber back into its upright position,
and replace the salt reservoir cap.
The "Salt" indicator should no longer be
lit.

Salt (PC) light is flashing

Miele dishwashers have a built-in water softener. I suspect the unit is indicating that the dishwasher softener salt is low or needs to be replenished.

Which model dishwasher do you have? http://www.mieleusa.com/products/modelsg5000.asp?cat=2&menu_id=1&oT=125&active=Our%20Products&subm=Home%20Appliances&thirdL=Dishwashers&fourthL=Products lists a number of their dishwashers and has the manuals for them. Click on the model and scroll down. Click on the Manuals tab. (Click on the Retired models if your dishwasher isn't on the first page.)

I hope this helps.

I want to know where to put my dishwasher tablet in my Kenwood KDW4TTSL please. And where does the salt go and how much do I use?

Im presuming that you don't have a manual. If you would like one, you can download a free PDF from here:
http://dl.owneriq.net/4/4e71b4c9-e100-4066-a29e-9c46abc1f5cf.pdf

According to the manual:

There is a recess on the right hand side of the door for detergent (Picture on page 6 of the manual). You can put a tablet in here.

With regard to salt (Also on page 6):

1. Unscrew the cap from the salt container

anticlockwise, which is located on the right side of the

inner box.

2. Load the salt into the container. Each time you may load 250g of salt, which can be used for 15

cycles.

3. Fill the water into the salt container until a small amount of water comes out(it is very important

when you use it for the first time).

4. Screw the cap back carefully.

Note:

1. Load the salt before the beginning of wash cycle so as to prevent corrosion.

2. Load the salt when the salt indicator light in the control panel is illuminated.

3. Only use dishwasher salt.
