HP LaserJet 1022 is a "host-based" printer so it must be connected to a PC. Load the driver on PC first and connect the USB cable when software tells you to do so.
Will not work on a Linksys print server.
LaserJet 1022N & LaserJet 1022NW have "special" HP print servers that can support HP host based printers.
What I would do, is go out the www.hp.com/#support. Download the latest drivers. Install them and start printing again. If it fails again, print a config page. If that prints correctly, that tells you that the printer is working correctly. Problem is with the interface. If you are using the parallel interface, try a different cable. If you are using the jet direct try a different one and a different cable. Could also be a bad formatter. Good luck
Thank you for contacting FixYa with your inquiry.
This printer can work very well via a standard printer cable directly connected to your computers LPT Terminal. Most of Microsoft's current Operating Systems already have the LaserJet J2300 drivers built in and will automatically install when connected.
To confirm your connection to go to your computers printer setup and ensure the driver is configured to print from LPT1 port and click on print a test page. (Start/Settings/Printers/LJ2300 - Right Click on properties then click on the tab for ports. The general tab should have a button to print test page)
The network card that comes with your printer (Jet Direct Card) will not be used with this method nor will the Ethernet cable be required.
Hope this helps helps. Please keep us updated and remember to rate this answer.

this problem is usually caused by an eio card in the printer, ( jet direct card or hard disk), first thing to do is to remove these cards and reboot with only the power cable connected to the printer, once this reboots if the printer reaches a ready state print a test page directly from the printer, if this prints fine, then the actual printer hardware is fine, then it is a matter of rebooting with the jet direct installed, if the printer hangs problem with the card needs replaced, if this works fine, them do the same thing with the hard disk,
serial to usb is not plug and play so i don't believe this configuration will ever work.
parrallel to usb is plug and play 90% of the time.
purchasing and installing a port replicator is a 100% fix as long as the formatter on the printer is working properly. good luck!
Better if you get USB HP printer to use with it. The only way to use that what you have it to get a printer server that supports parallel cable and connect the print server to your router using Ethernet LAN cable.
How is the machine connected? try changing the data cable if this doesn't work then shutdown your computer while the machine is on and reboot as if it is connected via LPT port some systems like to have the printer on before the computer.
Try this and I hope it helps if it doesn't then you might have a faulty print formatter board. Thanks J
Need some additional info:
-Network based or connected direct to the workstation?
-How big are the pdf files?
-Has anything changed with the printer, workstation/server host?
